Quaffing is a form of social drinking where most of the ale misses the mouth, and the tankard is used not so much as a vessel to drink from, but as something handy to conduct the singing. In Überwald, the amount of beer spilled while quaffing is reduced through the use of the sort of beer stein with a lid. This is generally a good-humoured way to spend an evening, although the humour does not rise much above rugby club level.

There is always a danger that quaffing might tip over into roistering.
