Bad Ass
From Discworld & Pratchett Wiki
A small village in the kingdom of Lancre in the Ramtops, mostly known for its funny name and the fact that Esk was born here (in Equal Rites). It is also the village watched over by the terrifyingly good (as in capable) witch Granny Weatherwax.
And since you ask, the name comes from a particulary stubborn donkey. The name may sound crude, but Lancrastians are not ones for senseless niceties.
Annotation
Another Bad Ass appears in Robert Anton Wilson and Robert Shea's Illuminatus! trilogy of novels.
Bad Ass, Texas, is the epitome of an ignorant, isolated, backwoods, redneck, Southern-state American town. It is populated by hard-of-thinking inbred rednecks and is distinctly unwelcoming to outsiders, especially "damn yankees". This is the sort of Southern hamlet that still flies the Confederate flag, 142 years after the end of the Civil War, and laments, as if it were only yesterday, that the South came second.
"Bad Ass" is also a North American slang term for "bad attitude" or, charitably, a stubborn clinging on to old ways of thinking, perceived as a little bit anachronistic by the rest of the country. In Bad Ass, Texas, there is a mind-set that still divides the human race up into the "slave-owning classes" and, well, the other sort. "Mayonnaise" Quirke, described as the sort of man who will always pronounce the word "negro" with an extra "r", would be at home here, especially in the company of its venal and lazy sheriff, Big Jim Cartwright, a man with lots of white sheets in the linen cupboard.
