Tiffany Aching is a young (9 years old in The Wee Free Men, and two years elapse between subsequent novels) witch apprentice. She grew up in the lowlands, in a sheep-grazing region known as The Chalk. She has a small brother Wentworth and six older sisters including Hannah and Fastidia. The most important person in her life was her late grandmother Granny Aching (who refered to her as Jiggit), though Granny Weatherwax has been taking a similarly important role. Tiffany's talent was discovered by an itinerant witch and teacher, Miss Tick, who was surprised, as everyone knows that good witches cannot grow on chalk. She is seen as not unlike Granny Weatherwax as a "gel". She is serious and literal like Granny but unlike Granny she is still learning fast (Granny's learned a lot but she'd say she's learning faster).
Her connection with the Chalk is very strong, and important to her - her connection with it saves Tiffany from the Hiver, helping her to expel it from herself when it had consumed every other victim it took.
Since she fought off the Queen of the Elves with a frying pan to save her little brother, Wentworth, and the baron's son, Roland, the Nac Mac Feegle (who helped her on her quest, and who made her a temporary Kelda, or queen) have watched her and helped her through danger, as was presented in her eleventh spring and thirteenth winter, in the form of a hiver and the Wintersmith. The former is an entity, not really a being, and a conglomeration of souls and memories; it possesses the bodies of powerful people, which results in their deaths. It could jump through a million universes but have trouble crossing a room. The latter, the Wintersmith, is the spirit of winter - when Tiffany joins the Dark Morris dance which turns autumn into winter, she jumps into the place for Summer, resulting in a lovestruck Wintersmith and a very angry Summer, who believes that Tiffany is trying to take her place.
She lives, as aforementioned, on the Chalk, but in the second novel she studies in mountains close to Lancre with Miss Level, who has two bodies (one of which is killed by the hiver.) By the third, she has moved to live with Miss Treason, an eerie blind old witch who uses any passing animal - her favorites are ravens and mice - to be her eyes for her. Miss Treason dies in the middle of the book, leaving Annagramma Hawkin to take her cottage and Tiffany to clean up the mess Annagramma leaves behind. She also has a strong (if a bit prickly) mentor-apprentice relationship with Granny Weatherwax (Mistress Weatherwax to everyone else), to whom she gives a white kitten later called You- as in "Here, You!" or "Stop that, You!".
Tiffany appears in the Tiffany Series which plays on the main continent of the Discworld.
Note: All Tiffany's adventures seem to have a connection to winter. In The Wee Free Men, Fairyland and the parts of the Chalk that get taken over by the Fairy Queen are covered with snow. In A Hat Full of Sky, the creature that takes over Tiffany is called a hiver (hiver being the French word for winter). In Wintersmith, the Wintersmith that brings winter to the land falls in love with Tiffany.
