The Long Earth is a phenomenon explored in (unsurprisingly) The Long Earth. Imagine a pack of cards. Our world- Roundworld, Datum Earth, it goes by many names- is in the middle, and one can travel, using the Stepper, through the cards, although one often experiences nausea. Hardly any of the worlds are occupied, so it seems the evolution of mankind is a unique thing. It is unknown whether the card pack circles round to meet itself, or whether there is something more mysterious at the end. However, as one travels further from Datum Earth the differences become more pronounced, with worlds in the ten-millions having a much greater chance of being uninhabitable than the closer ones, and one starts to find large sections of "purple scum" worlds where no complex life exists. By the two hundred millions one finds Earths which have different levels of gravity, and it has been speculated that there may be a world where Earth never existed at all.

Datum Earth is one of many 'interglacial' worlds; that is, worlds that are covered in trees and rich forms of life. Animals thrive there, with unusual species of armadillos and horses being in profusion. Who knows, there might be a Hermit Elephant in there. The interglacial worlds are surrounded by a set of worlds experiencing ice ages- this is called the Ice Belt, and it starts at West 11. As a result the previous world, West 10, has become a sort of 'mustering' world, where supplies and suchlike can be purchased.

Similarly there is the Mine Belt, a set of worlds filled with desolate deserts and rich minerals, and the Corn Belt, which is good farming country and is ideal for setting up colonies. It starts at West 100,000 and extends to around West 460,000 or so.

There are some worlds that are mere dust-bowls, like the worst class of planets, or are covered in ice, where nothing can grow. These are called Joker Worlds, and are not to be confused with the other Jokers.
Diamond Worlds also exist: these are places of truly outstanding potential, for one reason or another, and create excitement for what they represent. Rectangles is one, as it carries evidence that there was once a technological civilisation here way in advance of Datum Earth. But the fact its people all died out might just conceivably be related to an awful lot of smouldering radiation...

Belts of Earths, and notable Earths
* The Low Earths, Earths less than about 100 (?) steps away from Datum Earth.
** Datum Earth
** East 2: The Chinese part of this Earth is kept as a nature reserve.
** East 3
** West 5
** West 10: the last Western world before the Ice Belt.
** West 11
** East 38 proves people just can't be trusted with brand spanking new planets to colonise.
* The Ice Belt, starting from West 11 and extending to about West 36,000.
* The Mine Belt, covering West 36,000 to West 100,000.
* The Corn Belt, covering West 100,000 to about West 460,000.
** West 100,000, also known as Good Old Hundred K.
** West 101,752: contains New Scarsdale, a "county seat", the "county" in question spanning several worlds, and including Reboot.
** West 101,754: the world on which Reboot was founded.
** West 141,759: a world under quarantine.
** West 191,248: a slightly shop-soiled Long Earth.
** West 389,413
** Cueball: a perfectly smooth copy of Earth, hence the name.
* Unnamed belt, from West 460,000 to West 1,000,000.
** West 485,671: a Joker World.
** The world containing Second Person Singular, near West 700,000.
** West 831,264: a Joker.
* The High Meggers, from West 1,000,000 to some way past the Gap. Includes subregions such as the Valhallan Belt.
** West 1,176,865
** West 1,217,756: location of New Springfield.
** West 1,349,877
** West 1,397,426: location of Hell-Knows-Where.
** West 1,400,013: the location of the settlement of Valhalla.
** Happy Landings is somewhere around here.
** West 1,617,524: The home Long Earth of the Beagles.
** West 1,617,848
** Gap Minus One: the nearest Long Earth to the Gap, a little bit past West 2,000,000.
** The Gap: strictly speaking the first Western Gap, but everyone just calls it the Gap. Later used as a point of entry to the Long Mars.
** First Person Singular is somewhere on the West side of the Gap.
* Unnamed belt up to approximately West 30M. A crustacean-dominated subbelt exists, centred on West 17M or thereabouts.
** West 17,297,031: contained a society of crabs, complete with buildings and palace.
* Purple Scum Belt 1, from a bit before West 30M to around West 100M. Seventy million worlds that don't contain any life more complex than single-celled bacteria, though one presumes there are a few exceptions in there.
* Pangaean Belt, a subbelt of the first Purple Scum belt, from about West 35M to about West 50M. Notable for supercontinents, very low oxygen levels and high carbon dioxide levels.
** West 35,693,562: a typical Pangaean Belt world consisting of a single supercontinent, the interior of which is too dried out to support life at all.
* Cnidarian Belt, from a little past West 100M to about West 110M.
** West 102,453,654: a typical Cnidarian Belt world.
* Purple Scum Belt 2, from West ~110M to West ~130M.
* Anaerobic Belt, from West 130M to about West 161M. Worlds in this belt contains no oxygen-producing life, and hence no oxygen.
* Unnamed belt, West ~161M to West ~182M. The first half of this belt is dominated with acid-based life; the second half contains many worlds where the amount of land is much higher or lower than the Datum, and a few more examples of "Traversers" similar to First Person Singular.
** West 161,753,428: one of many worlds within the belt that contain acid-based life.
** West 174,827,918
* Bonsai Belt, West ~182M to West ~190M. Another belt consisting largely of dual-origin life.
** West 182,498,761: a typical Bonsai Belt world.
** West 182,674,101: the location where the Neil Armstrong I crashed.
* West ~190M to West ~210M: another purple scum belt.
* West ~210M to West ~220M: another Anaerobic Belt.
* West ~220M onwards, where there are Gaps all over the place, and the number of moons Earth has keeps changing, as does the gravity. It is believed that this is due to the process of Earth's formation occurring differently in these worlds.
** West 239,741,211 a.k.a Karakal.
** West 247,830,855: where Earth is merely a moon of a larger planet.
** West 250,000,000: the furthest Western world visited by the expedition of 2045. The commemorative cairn here is bigger than the Chinese one on East 20,000,000.
* Earths East of the Low Earths. If these worlds are also divided into regions, the names of these regions are unknown.
** East 2,201,749: contained a complex ecosystem that was predicted to be wiped out by a hypercane between visits.
** East 2,217,643: the first Eastern Gap, discovered by the Chinese expedition of 2040. The fact that Datum Earth lies close to halfway between both Gaps probably says a lot.
** East 8,616,289: home to what appears to be a society of tortoises.
** East 20,000,000: the furthest Eastern world visited by the Chinese expedition. Contains a commemorative cairn and not much else.

Datum Earth is the only known of the Long Earths where Humans evolved and can be considered as our Earth in the The Long Earth series. Over the course of the first two books, it passes from the dominant influence in colonising the Long Earth to being the distant colonising power that the Steppers inevitably rebel against. following a calamity lampshaded in The Long War - namely the eruption of the volcanic caldera under Yellowstone - Datum Earth eventually realises the relationship is changed and it is now pretty much dependent on the colony worlds for its survival. By The Long Utopia the climactic changes caused by the eruption have caused large portions of the planet to be effectively abandoned, including most of the United States; the waves of migration caused by this have resulted in new types of communities arising in the Low Earths.
** West 1,349,877
** West 1,397,426: location of Hell-Knows-Where.
** West 1,400,013: the location of the settlement of Valhalla.
** Happy Landings is somewhere around here.
** West 1,617,524: The home Long Earth of the Beagles.
** West 1,617,848
** Gap Minus One: the nearest Long Earth to the Gap, a little bit past West 2,000,000.
** The Gap: strictly speaking the first Western Gap, but everyone just calls it the Gap. Later used as a point of entry to the Long Mars.
** First Person Singular is somewhere around here.
* Unnamed belt up to West 30M.
* Purple Scum Belt 2, from West 110M to West 130M.
* Anaerobic Belt, from West 130M to about West 161M. Worlds in this belt contains no oxygen-producing life, and hence no oxygen.
* Unnamed belt, West 161M to West 175M. The first half of this belt is dominated with acid-based life; the second half contains many worlds where the amount of land is much higher or lower than the Datum, and a few more examples of "Traversers" similar to First Person Singular.
** West 161,753,428: one of many worlds within the belt that contain acid-based life.
* Bonsai Belt, West 182M to West 190M. Another belt consisting largely of dual-origin life.
** West 182,498,761: a typical Bonsai Belt world.
** West 182,674,101: the location where the Neil Armstrong I crashed.
* West 190M to West 210M: another purple scum belt.
* West 210M to West 220M: another Anaerobic Belt.
* West 220M onwards, where there are Gaps all over the place, and the number of moons Earth has keeps changing, as does the gravity.
The follow-up to The Long Earth...

Blurb
A generation after the events of The Long Earth, mankind has spread across the new worlds opened up by Stepping. Where Joshua Valienté and Lobsang once pioneered, now fleets of airships link the stepwise Americas with trade and culture. Mankind is shaping the Long Earth , but in turn [[the Long Earth|The Long Earth] is shaping mankind. A new ‘America’, called Valhalla, is emerging more than a million steps from Datum Earth, with core American values restated in the plentiful environment of the Long Earth - and Valhalla is growing restless under the control of the Datum government.

Meanwhile the Long Earth is suffused by the song of the trolls, graceful hive-mind humanoids. But the trolls are beginning to react to humanity’s thoughtless exploitation. Joshua, now a married man, is summoned by Lobsang to deal with a gathering multiple crisis that threatens to plunge the Long Earth into a war unlike any mankind has waged before.
Annotations
Lots and lots. As a general remark, it would seem that Terry is slyly slipping in lots of references to people and events in the Discworld series to delight the fans, or else to see if anybody notices.

Discworld references:-

Sally Linsay's love for trolls and her fearsome advocacy for them calls to mind Adora Belle Dearheart and her passion for golems and Goblins.

* Corgi paperback pp133-134: - The rather big mess made of several East Earths by Chinese attempts to improve on Nature by use of nuclear bombs to relocate a few mountains. It is possible Terry Pratchett is here alluding to Leonard of Quirm and his excited plans to use explosive metal bombs in major civil engineering works, for eg to remove inconveniently located mountains. This is how it would all work out in practice...

* Corgi paperback page 400: - Carl the troll is outraged at an ignorant and malicious human downgrading him to the status of a mere mindless animal. He grabs the hapless youth by the ankle, lifts him upside down, and bounces his head off the ground until a human he respects politely asks him to let go. It appears that trolls are incensed by use of the A-Word.
* Corgi paperback page 431: the speculation about the Huge God that fell to the Long Earth known as 1,349,877 and whose body changed the face of the very planet. Hmm. T5E reference here?
* The Joker world 1,617,848 was home to an advanced civilisation, who had access to technology and who were religiously-minded, who used a Pyramid as a power source and storage point for a lot of energy. It is implied the Great Pyramid was responsible for bringing about the end of their civilisation. Hmmm. A shout-out to P?
* Corgi paperback page 466 and on: Joshua Valienté is forced to run for his life and escape capture from pursuing Beagles. the deal is, if he wins he gets peace between humans and Beagles, If he dies he becomes a trophy head on the wall. Effectively he is playing The Game as it is known in Überwald. And against creatures who have all the attributes of Werewolves.

Other References:-
There are a lot of Roundworld "Music With Rocks In" references. Cataloguing them all will be as much fun as doing the annotations for SM, but this will take time. There are a lot of them.

* Corgi paperback page 41:- Daniel Valienté jumps the shark - literally - at his school play.On one water-ski. A reference to the seminal event where Fonzie water-skis over a shark - which is held to have heralded the decline from greatness of TV sitcom Happy Days, and which is now a cultural meme for the defining moment where a TV series, or a band's musical output, or a series of formerly well-loved books begins to descend into mediocrity. Hmm. Terry's comment on suggestions his writing has jumped the shark?

* Corgi paperback page 95:- The crewman told Dan his name was Bosun Higgs is a reference to a character from the Girl Genius comic by Phil and Katja Foglio. He's introduced as airman third class Higgs, an airship crewman. In the old navies third class would be the rank of Bosun.

* Corgi paperback page 463: Lobsang is trying to persuade the Trolls to come out of their sanctuary with the Beagles and give humanity another chance. His last comment is a gnomic Tomorrow Never Knows. And Stepping is just a little matter of turn off your mind, relax and float downstream... (which Joshua is almost immediately forced to do - literally - as part of The Game.)
* Corgi paperback page 469: a thin wailing song, something about remembering Walter... Finn McCool's prized posession is an antique Walkman and we know his latest acquisition is a Kinks LP, the Village Green Preservation Society. The lines are:
* Walter, isn't it a shame the way our little world has changed?/Do you remember, Walter, how we said we'd fight the world so we'd be free./We'd save up all our money and we'd buy a boat and sail away to sea..
* The Kinks also recorded "Apeman", a song about leaving the world as it is and becoming more free in a simpler cleaner society somewhere else.
* Corgi paperback page 493: Sister Agnes is referencing All My Trials, a protest song dating from the 1950's recorded by artistes including Pete Seeger, Joan Baez and Nick Drake.

* FinnMcCool is introduced as a member of a humanoid race with very large distinctive ears who are driven by the need to acquire, trade and to make profit. A bit of a quirky, or perhaps Quarky, character.
* The human names taken by prominent Beagles were conferred by Steppers and Combers who passed through the Beagle world. They imply a certain skewed sense of humour not shared with the Beagles. Petra was the much-loved pet dog on children's TV show Blue Peter. Brian was the family dog on animated comedy Family Guy - who proved himself to be more intelligent than his owner. Snowy was Tintin's pet dog in the Belgian cartoons. And the most famous Beagle in Earth pop culture is Charley Brown's canine friend, Snoopy...

Extra
The retailer Waterstones exclusive 'Metallic' edition contained the extra chapter 'A Stepper's Guide To The Long Earth: A Conversation.' This is described by Waterstones as a conversation between the two authors, but is presented as a talk between Joshua and Lobsang.

** First Person Singular is somewhere around here.
* Unnamed belt up to West 30M. A crustacean-dominated subbelt exists, centred on West 17M or thereabouts.

The Long Earth is a phenomenon explored in (unsurprisingly) The Long Earth. Imagine a pack of cards.
An informal gentleman's agreement exists between the United States and China, the world's two major superpowers, concerning the Long Earth. The Americans and their allies are free to step out in one direction - referred to as Earth West - whilst the Chinese are free to explore and colonise in the opposite direction of the ring of infinite alternate Earths, known as Earth East.

Whilst in the context of the novels the Chinese have moved on from the form of planned state socialism and collectivisation known as communism, many of the old grandiose dreams still persist from communist days. With the imperative to house, feed and offer decent lives to a population now estimated at two billion, the Chinese can't help but tinker with the new worlds. Just as the old Soviet Union and Communist China expended massive resources and manpower to improve on the landscape Nature had given them, the Chinese could not resist some pretty major improvements on their new property.

The Soviet Union made major attempts to divert water into new canals connecting major rivers - for travelling east-west in a country where the rivers all run north-south - and to build hydro electric dams, and even to divert the flow of major rivers to where it was perceived to be needed more. The Chinese followed suit in their own country. The current governments of Russia and newly independent states are still grappling with the unintended ecological consequences, such as the creation of new deserts where once there was farmland, and the "oh crap" realisation that the Aral Sea is now a third of the size it used to be, as the rivers that used to drain there now... don't.

Similarly, the Chinese tried to improve on Nature in a few Earth East worlds. The intention was good. To divert rivers starting in the Himalayas to drain north rather than south, to make the Gobi Desert green. Or better still, to get rid of some of those inconvenient mountains altogether. Quite a lot of nuclear weapons were used to remodel the landscape.

The result is a group of worlds that are now so badly irradiated and inimical to human life that they are unfit for human habitation and will remain so for thousands of years. Some people just cannot be trusted with brand spanking new planets fresh out of the packaging...

It is possible Terry Pratchett is here alluding to Leonard of Quirm and his excited plans to use explosive metal bombs in major civil engineering works, for eg to remove inconveniently located mountains. This is how it would all work out in practice...

Hardly any of the worlds are occupied, so it seems the evolution of mankind is a unique thing. It is unknown whether the card pack circles round to meet itself, or whether there is something more mysterious at the end. However, as one travels further from Datum Earth the differences become more pronounced, with worlds in the ten-millions having a much greater chance of being uninhabitable than the closer ones.

It starts at West 100,000 and extends to around West 450,000 or so.

Notable Earths
* Datum Earth
* Earth East 1-6 prove people just can't be trusted with brand spanking new planets to colonise.
* East 3
* West 5
* West 10
* West 100,000, also known as Good Old Hundred K.
* West 101,754: the world on which Reboot was founded.
* West 191,248 - a slightly shop-soiled Long Earth.
* West 485,671: a Joker World.
* West 831,264: a Joker.
* West 1,176,865
* West 1,349,877
* West 1,397,426: location of Hell-Knows-Where.
* West 1,400,013: the location of the settlement of Valhalla.
* West 1,617,848
* West 1,617,524 The home Long Earth of the Beagles.
* West 2,217,643: the nearest Long Earth to the Gap.
* East 2,201,749: contained a complex ecosystem that was wiped out by a hypercane between visits (probably).
* East 2,217,643: the first Eastern Gap, discovered by the Chinese expedition of 2040. The fact that Datum Earth lies as close to halfway between both Gaps as is possible probably says a lot.
* East 8,616,289: home to what appears to be a society of tortoises.
* East 20,000,000: the furthest Eastern world visited by the Chinese expedition. Contains a commemorative cairn and not much else.
* Cueball: a perfectly smooth copy of Earth, hence the name.

It has justly been estimated that 90% of fan fiction is, to be kind, not worth the computer run-time
and server space it hopefully and optimistically occupies. However, as
tvtropes explains, the remaining 10% is to die for. (Well, perhaps feel slightly ill.)

Let us therefore use this space to make recommendations as to favourite pieces of fan-fic, so as to
direct the steps of those who have discovered the long gaps between official Discworld novels written by Sir Terry are getting even longer and bleaker.
One of the best works of fanfiction I've seen. It sketches out how Ankh-Morpork's future might be and all of the characters are, well, in-character. It's filled with a good amount of references, another point where it doesn't differ from the books.
Imagine a link opening up between the Discworld and Middle Earth. Imagine Elrond, wanting an
additional insurance policy against the failure of the Fellowship, wanting a tenth person there with
the guile, ability, and raw cynicism necessary to bond together nine hopeless dreamers and make it
work. He asks Vetinari for advice. And so Sam Vimes, with a wholly different world-view on Dwarfs,
Elves, Trolls and Orcs, is sent to advise the expedition... uproarious humour ensues. Recommended by
A very adorable, if a bit silly one-shot. The synopsis at ff.net (Hex and a mysterious woman) are rather misleading and likely scared a good number of people away. While yes, the basic plot is 'Hex falls in love' it is a very nice read.

Quite possibly the single most outstanding work of fan fiction - overlapping fan art - that I have ever come across. Just reading it (and appreciating the art work involved) makes me glad to be alive and to have woken up and logged on this morning. it also makes me jealous! (Green-eyed wailing at knowing I may never produce anything as good as this in my life).

Synopsis: Assassin Andrew Salt has done his research, at great personal cost, to produce a hypothetical risk assessment of how easy or otherwise it would be to inhume Arch-Chancellor Mustrum Ridcully. He has infiltrated the University and even "acquired" books and documents from the Library (necessitating claims on his Guild in-sewer-ants policy). The resulting analysis, done according to standard Guild requirements, has been critically acclaimed and entered for the Teatime Prize for best inhumation plan for a superhuman or magically-guarded entity. A sheer joy and delight to read and I cannot praise it more warmly. AgProv (talk) 03:56, 3 December 2012 (PST)

And of course Terry's other works and collaborations have attracted fan fiction as well. As before, without the checks and balances of editors, agents and publishing houses, some is so diabolical that Anthony Crowley would approve it as smearing a patina of revulsion, boredom and irritation over the greatest number of Internet-capable humans. (Without his having to raise a finger save for the initial effort involved in sponsoring FanFic.net to get up and running.) But the Arrangement decrees that Aziraphale gets a look-in too. There are GO fanfics which are perfectly heavenly to read.

It starts at West 100,000 and extends to around West 450,000 or so.

Hardly any of the worlds are occupied, so it seems the evolution of mankind is a unique thing (though the rest of this page proves otherwise). It is unknown whether the card pack circles round to meet itself, or whether there is something more mysterious at the end. However, as one travels further from Datum Earth the differences become more pronounced, with worlds in the ten-millions having a much greater chance of being uninhabitable than the closer ones.

Datum Earth is one of many 'interglacial' worlds; that is, worlds that are covered in trees and rich forms of life. There is speculation concerning a "Huge God" which fell to earth an unguessable time ago, whose corpse carried bacteria and other organisms enabling a new and strange exobiology to take root here.
