Formerly the Rat-Catcher at the Opera House.

In the course of his job, which led him into the deeper and darker recesses of the Opera House, he discovered hidden treasure, and then made serious mistakes:

(i) He talked about it. Admittedly only to Mrs. Plinge, but who else was listening?

and

(ii) He was moved to whistle, out of pleasure at his sudden good fortune. On stage. This provoked a sudden attack of scenery, which at the time may or may not have been deliberate, and the rat-catcher was soon saying a semi-professional "hello" to the Death of Rats. While initially honoured by this and taking it as a supreme professional accolade, Pounder then uncomfortably realised reincarnation believed in him. A whole new life, or succession, of rodent lives beckoned to him...

(iii) During the great denoument scene at the end of the Opera, when Salzella is unmasked as the Evil Ghost and is gloating about his cleverness, it is revealed that Pounder made the mistake, once having found the stolen cash, of attempting to blackmail Salzella into giving him a share in return for silence. Salzella then showed Pounder that there are other means of attaining a sure silence...

Hello! Welcome to my User Page.

My name is Robert, and I am from the U.K.. I first got in to Terry Pratchett's work when a schoolmate loaned me a copy of Going Postal. I then found a copy of The Colour of Magic in the school library and since then I have gone on to read pretty much every Discworld novel (weirdly except Moving Pictures which I never seem to get around to buying [and I don't know why not!]). I have read some of the companion books and a few of Terry's non-fiction collections too.

I have been reading and enjoying this wiki for several years, and was once a different user (with pretty much no contributions) who was accidentally purged in a cleanup of spambots. I finally got around to re-registering (and hopefully will actually contribute more this time!).

Outside of the wiki I am a keen reader of other fantasy works, enjoy PC gaming, take lots of pictures and work as an I.T. nerd.

Harry King, also known as Piss Harry and King of the Golden River is a businessman in Ankh-Morpork. He places buckets in a number of establishments and charges the owners a quite reasonable fee to remove them once full. Harry then sells the contents, including saltpetre and ammonia, to alchemists and farmers. What can't be sold to these people can always be used to create compost, which can then be sold. Harry also collects rubbish for composting. People pay him to take away unwanted material, and then he can sell the material for more money.

Harry is a large pink-faced man who is often seen smoking a big cigar. He employs quite a lot of staff: witness the long lines staffing the conveyor belt looking out for specific types of recyclables, including trolls, golems, goblins, and gnolls (the only problem is that the gnolls might eat some of the stuff while the goblins convert likely-looking waste into unggue pots). There are also a number of big black dogs with some Lipwigzer ancestry. Not a Guild member, Harry resents the Guilds for having pressured him to join the Beggars, despite his having never begged for anything in his life. It is unstated why he was not instead recruited by the Guild of Plumbers and Dunnikindivers, although the unorthodox promptness of his bucket-removal services (every night, not "in a week or so, maybe two") may be to blame.

As a young man Harry was always very good at spying out valuable waste, such as tosheroons which could then be sold. As his wealth grew, he was able to hire gangs of street kids to act as workers, scavenging entire stretches of the river. Rival gangs were driven off or taken over, with Harry willing to hire trolls to act as enforcers long before anyone else caught on to the idea.

The gates of Harry's yard used to carry the slogan "H. King – taking the piss since 1961" but on the insistence of his wife he changed the latter part to "recycling nature's bounty".

Harry is quite illiterate, but he has the business sense to hire clerks who can and will honestly do his paperwork for him. Currently this is a nervous young man named Wallace. Although honest, the reason for Wallace's nervousness is that he knows dishonest clerks tend to become small amounts of profitable end-product, following an opportunity to get to know the guard-dogs better. Ever since earliest childhood, Harry has had a pretty direct way with those who want to cheat him.

Harry keeps ferocious mongrel guard dogs on his property. He wouldn't 'buy posh foreign dogs when he can buy the crossbreeds'. Moist von Lipwig mistakes the dogs for pedigree Lipwigzers (probably Discworld Rottweilers, although Rottweilers are referred to as themselves in CJ), a particularly savage breed of dog, but one which, as a Lipwig, he is familiar with, and is quite intrigued to find that the commands used to discipline lipwigzers still work on them, (though they may have only been responding to the tone and confidence shown by Moist.) Harry prefers it when burglars break in, so that he doesn't have to feed the dogs.

Harry is happily, devotedly married to he childhood sweetheart, Euphemia "Effie", (his petname for her is "Duchess"), with whom Harry has several daughters (two of whom have been named so-far in the franchise), and tries to lavish luxury on them in compensation for the perpetual bad smell around him. He is rich now and can get most of the things that money can buy, but one thing that is hard for him to get is class. Anyone who repays Harry a big favour by managing to get him some high-class guests at special occasions can make him very glad indeed.

Harry features again in MM in a small but pivotal role, where his acumen as a businessman and developer is set is stark contrast to the money-making sleight of hand of Moist von Lipwig. His confidence in Moist's leadership of the Royal Bank of Ankh-Morpork leads him to deposit quite a large sum of money just as the bank is about to be closed down.

By the time of SN, Lord Vetinari has knighted him, dubbing him Sir Harold King and officially naming his wife "a ladyship". This gives her such great snobbish pride that Lady Euphemia is said to come down hard on any improper usage of her title, and therefore his title. But to old friends, Sir Harold's fine with an informal "Harry" in the privacy of his office.

As well as an impressive fleet of honey-wagons, carts and horsedrawn drays, Sir Harry also runs a fleet of riverbarges and lighters to patrol the Ankh for likely-looking waste, before it dissolves or alchemically transmutes. He has a personal barge called the Lady Euphemia, presumably after his wife. Although the interesting idea arises here. Like Britain's road transport magnate Eddie Stobart, a man who from humble beginnings rose to control a large road haulage fleet, is Sir Harry giving all his vehicles women's names? Stobart is famed for this whimsical quirk.

In RS, swayed by the new steam engine by Dick Simnel, (who becomes romantically involved with Harry King's favorite niece, Emily King), Harry provides the capital to build the "Ankh-Morpork and Sto Plains Hygienic Railway", and at the end of the book is given a lordship. According to Raising Steam, Harry is also a grandfather. In CDA, it is revealed that Harry has also expanded into shipping and managing a dockyard, with the establishment of King's Dock Rimwards of the River Gate.

Annotation
A euphemism is a literary device involving "trading up" a description of a place or a process or an event so that it sounds more genteel and refined. As an example, consider "fornication" or "copulation" as a euphemism for a shorter word also beginning with "f". Or "congress" as a refined and more genteel way of saying "copulation" – a higher-level euphemism. Or the slightly bizarre to British ears Americanism – "going to the bathroom" for "using the toilet". A general common point of all euphemism is that it takes a bodily function and related terminology, either sexual or scatological, and seeks to evade as much association with that bodily function as it possibly can.

Hence the whole business with taking the piss since 1961 and re-presenting it as recycling nature's bounty. And the woman responsible for this is Lady Euphemia King. (Effie still, to her husband?)
The first Low King of the dwarfs, from whom all subsequent Low Kings have gained their legitimacy, because he forged the Scone of Stone, which all dwarves had to sit on to become Low King. He is also the greatest dwarf folk hero of all time the subject of several dwarf operas and epics especially Bloodaxe and Ironhammer, reputed to be the greatest dwarf love story in history.

He was the leader of the dwarfs at the (first) Battle of Koom Valley, he had journeyed there to seek peace with the trolls. However, when the Valley's mists lifted suddenly, hotheads of each race accused the other side of ambushing them. B'hrian later managed to leave a message inside a Cube, detailing the whole sad mess.

B'hrian Bloodaxe died shortly after the Battle of Koom Valley. He is fondly remembered by dwarfs everywhere and examples of his battle bread are displayed in the Dwarf Bread Museum in Ankh-Morpork. Mr Hopkinson, the former curator of the Dwarf Bread Museum, believed that the loaf he displayed, which was on loan for a couple of weeks, was the actual Battle Bread that Bloodaxe had personally used to slay fifty-seven trolls at Koom Valley. This is unlikely, because in Thud! he was found in a cave, with his loaf of dwarf bread beside him. Given what was later revealed to be Bloodaxe's true part in the battle - he was working with the Diamond King of the Trolls to prevent conflict - it is very likely that this was a later elaboration of the myth. (Could even dwarf bread batter a stone-based troll to death - let alone 57?) However, that loaf of Battle Bread was known to be responsible for one death... perhaps it would be OK for return to its owners following a bit of sandblasting...

Character Annotations
He seems to have been named after Brian_Bloodaxe, of the 1985 game of the same name, which was released on the ZX Spectrum and the Commodore 64.

His name may also reference Eric_Bloodaxe the Norse warrior-king, and Brian_Boru, the early medieval king popularly thought to have united Ireland by freeing it from Viking occupation.

Could B'hrian be from Llamedos? B'hrian seems to be a take on the Welsh accent and the pronunciation of the letter R in some words.
On sale as of Thursday 13th October 2011, Snuff is the thirty-ninth book in the Discworld series, after ISWM. It primarily features Sam Vimes his family, and their domestic servants, and expands on the continuing story of the Watch as well. A sub-plot involves Mightily Oats and the goblins, and new Watch characters are referenced, including Captain Emile of the Quirm City Watch.

Terry's hint as to plot and content is that we should be aware that there are at least two meanings to the word "snuff".

Rob Wilkins (Terry's stenographer) read an extract from the current text at the 2010 Discworld Convention: the story features Goblins and commences with Sam Vimes going away on a two-week holiday with his wife to their country house, Crundells (which was mentioned in passing in the earlier half of the events in ).

Blurb
According to the writer of the best selling crime novel ever to have been published in the city of Ankh-Morpork, it is a truth universally acknowledged that a policeman taking a holiday would barely have had time to open his suitcase before he finds his first corpse.

And Commander Sam Vimes of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch is on holiday in the pleasant and innocent countryside, but not for him a mere body in the wardrobe, but many, many bodies and an ancient crime more terrible than murder.

He is out of his jurisdiction, out of his depth, out of bacon sandwiches, occasionally snookered and occasionally out of his mind, but not out of guile. Where there is a crime there must be a finding, there must be a chase and there must be a punishment.

They say that in the end all sins are forgiven.

But not quite all...
In some editions, most notably the Waterstone's Gold imprint, the short story A Collegiate Casting-Out of Devilish Devices is included as a supplementary bonus story at the end of the main tale.

This story describes the reaction of the wizards of Unseen University to a proposal from the Patrician to introduce regulation of university education. It references the government inspector A.E. Pessimal, who goes on to have a significant role in

It was first published in the May 13th, 2005 issue of The_Times_Higher_Education_Supplement. This is its first print in the less ephemeral world of hardback books.

The new paperback edition of Snuff contains the first chapter of Dodger and chapters one and two of The Long Earth.

Indulgence: added Of the Twilight the Darkness to the list of notable goblins

Goblins are a small humanoid species on The Disc. They were generally despised by most other species until the events of SN, where they made their debut appearance and their culture was fleshed out.

Ponder Stibbons once played the role of Third Goblin in a school play.

Work and Culture
In a discussion about Dwarfs keeping up the old traditions, it is said that rich Dwarfs in non-Dwarfish professions, such as the clerical trade, will employ goblins to do nothing but hit small ceremonial anvils with small ceremonial hammers all day, purely to create the sort of atmosphere in which a Dwarf finds it easy to think. They are also mentioned in RM, in an excerpt from a Merchant's guild publication, as having delicatessens in the Shades.

Goblins, like some Dwarfs, typically live underground in large cave systems. In Ankh-Morpork they primarily work for Harry King in his industries. After the events of SN their reputation was enhanced and they now find work in more prestigious locations where their natural gifts with machinery come in handy, such as on the clacks system or Moist von Lipwig's new railway engines.

Due to their former low reputation goblins used to be used as slave labour on plantations by unsavoury characters such as Gravid Rust.

Goblins may be incredibly talented musicians, with the young harpist and composer Tears of the Mushroom being a prominent example.

Relation to other species
Gnolls, in earlier books, are explicitly described as a sort of stone-goblin. (Use of the word "goblin" supports the position that originally, Terry Pratchett intended them to be the Discworld analogue of Tolkien's Orcs, as they are vicious, sadistic, murderous, and attracted to filth). However, by the time of J, all that appears to survive of this original concept is the attraction to filth and possibly a little residual cruelty.

In UA, a new race, initially confused with goblins, is introduced to the Discworld. This association is refuted at the end of the book, where Lord Vetinari remarks that Orcs must have been bred from men - only humanity has the inherent cruelty requisite for being subverted into orcishness; goblins are too small-time. TP really doesn't have that much respect for humankind...

Goblins are, in fact, a separate species, unrelated to Orcs, Gnolls, Gnomes or Pictsies.

Religion
In SN, goblins and their culture/religion are explored in greater depth. Their religion, Unggue, is based around the belief that everything that was once part of your body is always part of your body, and thus, it must be buried with you after death.

Notable Goblins
*Of the Lathe the Swarf
*Of the Wind Regretfully Blown ("Billy Slick")
*Shine of the Rainbow
*Sound of the Rain on Hard Ground
*Stinky
*Tears of the Mushroom
*The Cold Bone Wakes
*Of the Twilight the Darkness
*By adoption
**Felicity Beedle (technically)
**Breaking Wind (Nobby Nobbs)

Annotation
On the change of the nature of Gnolls through the books: there is a famous critical comment on Terry Pratchett's work, comparing him to Tolkien, but with the caveat that "in these Détènte-driven days, Pratchett has no horrors waiting to emerge from the East". (He doesn't have an East as such, in fact).

It could just be that an Orc-analogue simply wasn't needed - look at the way Elves have filled the niche for a non-human Other, which is inimical to mankind - and having introduced Gnolls in an earlier book, they simply got recycled to fill a different socio-ecological niche more suited to Discworld. Which as an argument holds really well together until you get to UA and have to rip it all up and start again, when a new race, which might originally have begun as Goblins (or men - see the article) but was seriously improved on by Igors working for the Dark Side, is introduced.
Outside of the wiki I am a keen reader of other fantasy works, enjoy PC gaming, take lots of pictures and work as an I.T. nerd.
Greyhald "Tudgy" Spold (his nickname is mentioned in MP and LL) was Head of the Ancient and Truly Original Sages of the Unbroken Circle (a.k.a. the Illuminated Mages of the Unbroken Circle) - one of the seven-and-one orders of Wizardry at Unseen University during the events of COM.

In TLF, he is reported as being (currently) the oldest wizard in the world. When the senior wizards perform the Rite of AshkEnte, Spold sees Death looking at him oddly, and creates an extremely magical and complicated hiding place, using many rare and smelly oils, a paste made of powdered mayflies, the eightfold octogram of Witholding, red and green candles, protective amulets, and a box made of the wood of the curlyfern pine. Unfortunately, what all his preparations didn't take into account was that the box required air holes, and so the last words he heard were, Dark in here, isn't it?

In MP, we learn that as a student he was a friend of Windle Poons and "Numbers" Riktor, and in H, you can read about Spold's Unstirring Divisor - of which he is presumed, though not confirmed, to be the inventor.

In The Discworld Companion he is listed - probably incorrectly - as having been Archchancellor, although there is no evidence in the books that he ever held this title. If he ever did, he must have held the position before Galder Weatherwax and retired from it voluntarily: since he cannot have succeeded Galder even notionally before Ymper Trymon's takeover, on account of having died eight pages before Galder. It would seem more likely that the Discworld Companion is in error. The film version of TCOM sort-of-semi-rationalises this by making Spold be Weatherwax's likely successor should he outlive Weatherwax, which he does not.

Either way, there was no doubt to his title of oldest living wizard: his death left Windle Poons, his contemporary as a student, as the new holder of that position.

Extra Content

Blurb
To the consternation of the patrician, Lord Vetinari, a new invention has arrived in Ankh-Morpork - a great clanging monster of a machine that harnesses the power of all of the elements: earth, air, fire and water. This being Ankh-Morpork, it's soon drawing astonished crowds, some of whom caught the zeitgeist early and arrive armed with notepads and very sensible rainwear.
Moist von Lipwig is not a man who enjoys hard work - as master of the Post Office, the Mint and the Royal Bank his input is, of course, vital... but largely dependent on words, which are fortunately not very heavy and don't always need greasing. However, he does enjoy being alive, which makes a new job offer from Vetinari hard to refuse...
Steam is rising over Discworld, driven by Mister Simnel, the man wi' t'flat cap and sliding rule who has an interesting arrangement with the sine and cosine. Moist will have to grapple with gallons of grease, goblins, a fat controller with a history of throwing employees down the stairs and some very angry dwarfs if he's going to stop it all going off the rails...

Quote
The villains of the storybook had found their place in society, at last. All it needed was technology.
Interesting Additional Features
The Doubleday hardback features an expanded two page map of the Central Sea region on pp8-9, (or at least of its Hubwards side), which provides a lot of interesting detail as to locations of places previously only hinted at or else vaguely located. The map covers the region Quirm-Ankh-Morpork - Scrote - Überwald - Lancre with The Chalk, Sheepridge and the Octarine Grass Country shading in. No indication of scale is given, save for the incidental detail in the text that the completed railway line from Ankh-Morpork to Überwald is 1,200 miles long.

The Doubleday hardback special edition exclusive to the retailer WHSmith contained an additional extra short story Humphrey Newt's Thunderbolt Carriage.

This book had two deleted scenes cut from it called 'The Skeleton in the Cavern' and 'Counterblast.' These were reprinted in the convention exclusive Terry Pratchett's Folio.

Outside of the wiki I am a keen reader of other fantasy works, enjoy PC gaming, take lots of pictures and work as an I.T. nerd.

A Dwarfish phrase used in a heated argument between Sulien Heddwyn and Ardent.

From context, it may have a lot to do with tra'ka' - "And a Ginnungagap for those that say different!"

The Ginnungagap is viewed as a sort of Dwarfish Hell, or would be, if they believed in one; quite possibly, for a race predicated on order and its maintenance, being thrown into a place of utter chaos would be a sort of Hell. Ardent, the rogue grag with a grudge and an urge to vengeance, has this fate wished on him several times: most notably by Albrecht Albrechtson when he usurps the Low Kingship in a coup d'état

According to the History Monks, the Ginnugagap is the gap between the end of the Discworld and the beginning of the next creation. Lu-Tze believes that the dawn of an entirely new world would be a good thing, if only there were some way of crossing the Ginnugagap before it happened.

Annotation
Wikipedia defines Ginnungagap as the primordial empty abyssal void in Norse mythology, the primordial Chaos from which all things began and into which all things will eventually fall. It is possible Sulien was wishing the Grags to Hell as well as describing how little he cares for their views.

It is also worth noting, from a cultural and linguistic perspective, that in the Nordic countries of the Roundworld, Norway, Sweden and Denmark, the very worst possible **** Off! is "Go to Hell!". This is still fighting talk in Denmark and the intensity of this epithet is often not completely understood in nations that draw their ultimate oaths out of scatology rather than religion. Indeed, the English subtitles of a show like Borgen fail to realise this, and English viewers watching tend to wonder why the Danish cast are nearly coming to blows over what sounds like a very mild epithet (by English standards), where frequent expletives translated as "F*** Off!" are used in much less fraught discourse or heated situations. (These exist in the Nordic languages but are mild profanities, along the lines of "Sod Off!" or "Bugger Off!" in English.).
Blurb
William de Worde is the accidental editor of the Discworld's first newspaper. Now he must cope with the traditional perils of a journalist's life -- people who want him dead, a recovering vampire with a suicidal fascination for flash photography, some more people who want him dead in a different way and, worst of all, the man who keeps begging him to publish pictures of his humorously shaped potatoes.

William just wants to get at THE TRUTH. Unfortunately, everyone else wants to get at William. And it's only the third edition...

Plot
At the start of the story, William de Worde has been estranged from his wealthy father and makes a living writing an Ankh-Morpork newsletter which is sent out to other cities. The story begins when a group of dwarfs led by Gunilla Goodmountain arrive in the city with a new invention: a printing press with movable type. With the press set up in a hut behind The Bucket in Gleam Street, De Worde and the dwarfs begin to create Ankh-Morpork's first newspaper, the Ankh-Morpork Times, with some encouragement by Lord Vetinari.

Meanwhile, the New Firm (Mr. Pin and Mr. Tulip, a duo of criminals) arrive in the city. They have kidnapped a Vetinari lookalike named Charlie, and are charged by the 'Committee to Unelect the Patrician' to frame Vetinari for a murder. They plan to use Charlie to frame the Patrician for attempting to run away with stolen gold, but this nearly fails due to the Patrician's Assassin skills. They improvise by stabbing Drumknott and pushing Charlie into the hallway to 'confess'.

Aided by his new reporter Sacharissa Cripslock and vampire iconographer Otto Chriek, De Worde investigates the embezzlement against the Patrician, annoying the City Watch in the process. As it turns out, the criminals made the mistake of letting Vetinari's dog escape, and their assisting lawyer Mr. Slant warns them that the Watch will be able to extract information from it, so the New Firm are forced to search for the dog. Meanwhile, on his way back to the press, De Worde discovers that the Guild of Engravers, now the Guild of Engravers and Prínters have set up a cheap tabloid paper called the Ankh-Morpork Inquirer, full of totally unbelievable (even by Discworld standards) stories that a large part of the population seem to take seriously.

In the third edition of the Times, De Worde offers $25 for finding Wuffles. This causes a huge crowd of people to arrive offering a variety of animals, while the New Firm arrive in disguise. They are just about to attack De Worde when Otto takes a picture using "Dark Light", which as a side effect causes fear and panic among the crowd and a stampede of animals. Mr Pin demands that Slant increase their fee; he and Tulip head back to their base at the De Worde house, where they find Sacharissa Crisplock and take her back with them to the Press.

While they wait for De Worde to arrive, a fight breaks out and the machinery catches fire. Mr Pin and Mr Tulip take refuge in the basement, but boiling lead starts to pour through the ceiling. Pin shoots Tulip with a crossbow, and when he escapes, he attacks De Worde in a fit of rage and gets stabbed with a paper spike. De Worde discovers a Dis-organiser, and by listening through the imp's memory discovers that his father is behind the conspiracy.

De Worde confronts his father at his mansion, only to almost be captured and transported away. He is saved by Otto Chriek, who threatens Lord De Worde with vampiric revenge but ultimately lets him go. Using the New Firm's payment, De Worde buys a new press and unites with the Guild. Vetinari is reinstated as Patrician and informs De Worde that Charlie has decided to take up acting. The book ends after William and Sacharissa report on Captain Carrot saving an old lady from a runaway beer cart. Meanwhile, Mr Tulip repents before Death and is reincarnated as a woodworm, while Mr Pin is reincarnated as one of the humorously shaped potatoes mentioned in the blurb.

Literature
One of the themes explored in this book is the role of media in society. The toughest criticism of this is offered by Vetinari at the end of the book: "How come there is always the same amount of news?"

The two newspapers competing show mainstream journalism, with its heroic abilities, that are sometimes beyond those of the police, and yellow journalism (also known as "red-top" in Great Britain), with its potential to do damage.

*"Red-top papers: such as The Sun, the News of the World, the Sport, the Daily Star, et c, whose mast-heads are a splash of red behind the paper's name. The Daily Mirror used to be a black-top until it was bought by Robert Maxwell, who turned the masthead red and drove the paper down-market and de-intellectualised it. What had formerly been a respectable middle-market newspaper of centre-left opinion has never recovered and is still a pale ghost of what it once was.

The Watergate Scandal is also referenced at several points:
*The New Firm enter the city through the Water Gate
*The Committee to Un-elect the Patrician is a clear parody of the Committee to Re-Elect the President, although Vetinari is not elected
*Gaspode's alias, "Deep Bone" comes from Deep Throat, the anonymous informer who leaked information to the Press.
*Gaspode meets De Worde by the multi-storey stable block, the Discworld equivalent of a multi-storey car park where Deep Throat met reporters in secret
*The Disorganiser which reveals Lord De Worde. Nixon originally denied the allegations he faced but was exposed after taped conversations were discovered, revealing him to be in charge. And of course the myriad "expletive deleted" euphemism of the Nixon transcripts finds its Discworld home in the frequent recourse to "-ing"....

Outside of the wiki I am a keen reader of other fantasy works, enjoy PC gaming, take lots of pictures and work as an I.T. nerd.

All that glitters is gold.

Likely the loudest among the guilds in Ankh-Morpork, but not politically powerful. The Alchemists' Guild is known more for its failures than its successes. That is to say, more people (in fact, everybody in the city) are aware of the explosions produced by the guild's members rather than the actual products and services they render. The guild building is blown up a few times a month, and is therefore under a perpetual state of repair. Supposedly, an alchemist's goal is to turn things into gold; it is strange, then, because it should be hard to make metals explode. In reality, the alchemists also mess with all sorts of chemical reactions. Their development of the Octo-cellulose film led to the moving pictures industry, and the guild president was, for quite a while, leader of the industry (in MP). Another notable project was to transmute things into artificial ivory, so that billiard balls could be made without going to the trouble of getting the tusks off the elephants (appears in MAA). Alchemists dabble in everything they can get their hands on.

The Alchemists' Guild would make a very bad neighbor. Yet, the Gamblers' Guild likes their location right across the street. The reason probably has to do with the Lady and the opportunity for a stable bet.

Members
*President: Thomas Silverfish
*Secretary: Sendivoge

Many Alchemists, or maybe apprentices in the guild, are likely to be former members rather than current members, because they tend to die of explosions or from drinking whatever chemicals they had mixed together. In a queer way, it is fortunate that Alchemists usually don't spend enough time in social company, or don't even live long enough, to marry and have children, otherwise, the widows and orphans fund would be in permanent deficit.

A notable former member who is still alive is Cheery Littlebottom, now head of forensics in the Ankh-Morpork City Watch (joined in Feet of Clay). Cheery was expelled from the guild through the roof while blowing up a much larger than usual part of the guild council hall. From what Cheery remembers, it is said that there are two signs of a good Alchemist: the athletic who can get behind an upturned bench very quickly, and the intellectual who knows exactly when this needs to be done.

Leonard of Quirm, while not a guild member, was recognised by Mr Silverfish as a man who 'tinkered' with the alchemical arts and perhaps belonged to all guilds, including the Alchemists.

Demarcation
Alchemists are traditionally very, very, wary of anything that smacks of magic because they have no wish to meddle in the affairs of wizards. Who on the Discworld may not be all that subtle but are certainly quick to anger, especially towards amateurs poaching on their turf. Considering that if only one out of two is right, the anger of wizards is the important one to be wary of, this is the reason why the perceived magic of moving pictures was taken out of Ankh-Morpork to the safely distant location of Holy Wood.

Meanwhile, the Alchemists may not be aware that the Wizards have developed an equal caution towards dabbling in anything that could be perceived as "science", and therefore by right the alchemists' province...
The more traditional Ramkins were arrogant and patriotic like the other noble families on the Sto Plains. The Ramkins prided themselves in their men never having died in their own beds, and their women always rolling the bandages waiting for war casualties. The Ramkins were perhaps a little more sensible and/or forthright than the other nobles. One ancestral Ramkin, Sybil's father, in fact, saved the estate from disastrous modifications; he achieved this by shooting "Bloody Stupid" Johnson in the leg when he approached the house.

Sybil's grandfather, Sir Joshua Ramkin, is known to have been a more competent and able military leader who raised Ramkin family regiments. At a time when no wars were going on in the central continent and there was apparently a distressing lack of sworn enemies to fight, Sir Joshua led a military expedition to Howondaland for reasons which, as yet, are unspecified. By the time he left Howondaland, there had by all accounts been a large and unseemly amount of swearing and several sworn enemies had been newly created. The battle of Lawkes Drain may have been fought in Howondaland under his generalship.
Wikipedia defines a Ramekin as

<blockquote>
<p>A ramekin or ramequin is a small dish, often white in colour, typically preferred for the preparation and serving of various baked recipes. These can be either sweet or savoury, including desserts such as the classic crème brûlée or molten chocolate cake, and savoury dishes such as moimoi, cheese recipes, potted shrimps and soufflé.</p>

<p>The ramekin can be regarded as a vessel of the casserole variety, and similarly, due to its robust construction, is capable of withstanding the extreme heat of an oven, or, in the case of crème brûlée, the flare of a torch flame.</p>
Wikipedia defines a Ramekin as

<blockquote>

Indulgence: Actually not sure I read that right. Undoing until I check if that is a real thing.

It's like this.

The practice of exorcism is known in one variant or another, to all religions both on the Disc and on Roundworld. It is closely related to Banishing rituals: the idea being that the practitioner of magic or religion must be able to put down again that which he calls up, otherwise that hapless practitioner is in what Albert calls "the gyppo", mystically and metaphysically speaking. (Or, more specifically to Christianity, the forcible removal of unwanted spirits through the power of God.)

The idea that the human mind and soul may be co-inhabited, even forcibly occupied, by another is a widespread and prevalent one. There is even lots of anecdotal and actual proof for this on the Discworld: regard the practice of Borrowing which is a key and much admired proficiency in Witchcraft. Or at least, a much envied and much-coveted proficiency, by those witches who don't have the knack. This is a benign and largely benevolent form of possession - in fact, it cannot even be called possession, as a skilled witch such as Granny Weatherwax makes pretty damn sure that she is riding in another creature's mind purely as a passenger, albeit one who might from time to time make a suggestion to the driver as to speed and direction, as befits a back-seat rider. For a Witch knows enough to be absolutely sure that she has to be principled about how she steers the mind of another - we have a damn good reason not to go to the bad, as another practitioner of Magick said*. Granny is also aware that there must be some sort of pay-off to the creature which is Borrowed, offered by way of compensation: if she Borrows an eagle so as to be able to patrol Lancre from the air and reassure herself that all is well in the kingdom, she will make pretty damn sure there is a substantial meal of rabbit chunks awaiting it afterwards. A true possessing spirit wouldn't bother saying "thank you", nor would it go to the trouble of making you a dinner by way of compensation. As Theda Withel was told in MP when her body was temporarily hijacked for other ends, a real evil spirit wouldn't have let her put her shoes on first, and wouldn't have cared what it made her walk across.

Trouble arises when a self-taught witch walks in and out of her body at will, and considers this to be such an unremarkable thing that it isn't worth mentioning to her teachers in the Craft. Who, had they known, might have informed her that this is something no witch ever does frivolously, and whenever she does it, it is vitally important to leave your body guarded and protected while you are Out, otherwise Something Else might find the metaphysical loose windowcatch or back door key under the doormat before you can get back. In other worlds, this sort of thing inevitably leads to three hundred and sixty degree rotation of the head, accompanied by copious quantities of pea-green soup. Well, that's optional for demons, although Crowley would have too much style for that - he'd leave the gross-out stuff to Hastur or Ligur - and totally unspeakable for angels.

And then there is the sad but curious case of Altogether Andrews, described as some innocent but hospitable person of a psychic disposition who was simply overwhelmed by eight colonising souls, who take it in turns to possess his mind and body...

We also have Miss Pointer and Miss Pickles who inhabit the same body, but only Miss Pointer is aware that they rent out their basement to Mr. Shine's Thud academy...

It is possible to be possessed by an Angel of the Light, although most religions use a different vocabulary for this sort of thing, choosing to describe it as Walking With the Holy Spirit, Being Exalted, Yea, Even Unto The Seventh Heaven, and "loas, be buggered". The three or four people serially possessed by a temporarily discarnate Aziraphale might have a different word for it, calling it, for instance, a bloody nuisance, or "why am I talking like a poofter, if I'm communing with the spirits of the ancestors?"

Just as the Omnian Quisition had its executive arm, the Exquisition, and just as before you can exhume a corpse, the Assassins' Guild might first have inhumed its former owner, possession, and the subsequent option of exorcism, also has its flipside.

Insorcism is not the practice of taking an unwanted (not necessarily evil) spirit out of a person or place it is lodged in, often quite happily. In the hands of Professor John Hicks and the Department of Post-Mortem Communications - not, we wish to make it clear, a University department which has ever in the course of its life had anything at all to do with necromancy - insorcism is the precise opposite. Before exorcism can happen, somebody has to put the spirit there in the first place.
The job of the Insorcist involves placing a discarnate spirit in a lodging from which it subsequently will need to be winkled out with the metaphorical equivalent of a very big pin - it helps if there has been some negotiation between the Insorcist and the spirit as to selection of a preferred dwelling-place beforehand.

Thus did Professor Flead find himself living a happy afterlife in the Pink PussyCat Club, well out of the Department and way out of Hicks' hair... much to the consternation of the club management who cannot get anyone to sit in Seat Seven (front row, centre) for longer than nine seconds. They did try to take the seat away - but not for very long....

This is such a potentially potent skill that the University has banned the practice on ethical grounds. Otherwise, the general Ankh-Morpork ethos might come to the fore, even among Wizards, and a professional Insorcist could find himself with a lucrative living... "I hear you've got an indwelling psychic entity, squire. I can get it out, but you need to look at my scale of fees first..." Or "Nasty things, these possessing spirits. Truly nasty, friend. How many of 'em wouldn't you like?"

Therefore to buy the silence of his undergraduate student wizards, Hicks has to promise doctorates to a typical group of student wizards who, in any given term, only manage to present two-thirds of an essay between them. After all, as Hicks says, the College Council was perfectly correct to ban Insorcism on the grounds that it might fall into the wrong hands - ie, anyone else's but ours!

The whole business of Borrowing, possession of varying degrees, and Insorcism in particular, are dealt with in various books in the series; Insorcism as a specific concept is a feature of MM.
