Capital city of the [[Agatean Empire]], which rules the whole of the [[Counterweight continent]]. Hunghung is a busy and crowded city with even more market stalls than [[Ankh-Morpork]]. It once seemed to a traveller ([[Rincewind]]) that life in Hunghung takes place on the streets. The place is actually controlled by eunuchs. There were so many people that it was hard to actually see the road surface.

The [[Forbidden City]] of Hunghung is the part of the city that is the Emperor's palace.

During the course of {{SN}}, [[Sam Vimes]] fights (and easily beats) the blacksmith [[Jethro Jefferson]] here, and visits several times to question Jiminy for information. By the time Vimes is through with the former copper, the goblin head is nowhere to be seen and the pub is now proudly known as '''The Commander's Arms'''.

Crundells

Otherwise known as Ramkin Hall, this is the seldom-visited country estate of the Ramkin family, located in [[Quirm]] on the banks of the River [[Quire]]. [[Sam Vimes]] speculated that the reason why such establishments are known as "stately homes" is that they are about the size of the average small country. Crundells boasts a mile of trout stream and a pub, neither of which hold much interest to Sam save in his contemplating the metaphysics of how the hell anyone can own a mile of river and how do you know if the fish in it are yours, or whether they really belong to the bloated plutocrat with rights to the next mile upstream and have just swum down to willfully make work for lawyers.

The Ramkin family own a large rambling stately home profusely ornamented with statuary of naked women, long lengths of gauze and urns optional. [[Young Sam Vimes]], now six, and heir to all he surveys, has unerringly noted the lack of clothing and is by a multiversally binding law of childhood, asking his parents some ''difficult'' questions.

The Ramkins also own a private bridge over the Quire and by custom, passing boats must salute the house. Crundells also comes with a "big herd of people" who on closer examination turn out to be the resident servants. There is a gatekeeper called Mr [[Coffin]], a gardener who in accordance with the sort of naming you find in [[Lancre]] is called [[William Butler]], and a husband-and-wife butler and head housekeeper of slightly sinister mien. Mrs [[Silver (Crundells)|Silver]], the head housekeeper, is immediately recognisable as the sort of housekeeper Daphne du Maurier wrote about in ''Rebecca'', although Sybil is no Mrs deWinter and Sam Vimes, in his dreams, would ''never'' wish to go back to Crundells...

It also has a [[Hermit]] on the grounds, living in a grotto, and has had one for several generations.

The Shires

At the turnwise end of the [[Sto Plains]], below the [[Carrack Mountains]] and just outside the influence of the surrounding City-States of [[Ankh-Morpork]], [[Sto Lat]], [[Pseudopolis]] and [[Quirm]] lies a rural or exurban area known as '''the Shires'''. Due to the proximity of the four major cities, it is not quite as rural as the greater Sto Plains widdershins and hubward; it probably includes as many country estates of the neighbouring gentry as working farms (although these may be combined).

A portion is described in {{SN}}, up the river [[Quire]] from Quirm. This area includes [[Crundells]], the country seat of the [[Sybil Ramkin|Ramkins]] and now [[Samuel Vimes]], and the village of [[Hangnails]], twenty miles up the river. The region seems to be especially devoted to country homes and retirement villas of the affluent from the cities, with most of the local population occupied in their care and feeding. It is also home to a clan of [[Goblins]].

==Annotation==
Although people use the term 'the Shires' to refer to Middle England there is no obvious place, maybe Cambridgeshire, Oxfordshire, Wiltshire, Lincolnshire, Hampshire. Note there are also shires in Scotland and Wales, but things aren't clear. The Shire was the location of Hobbiton of ''The Lord of the Rings'' and ''The Hobbit''.

Regina Rust

Eldest and possibly only daughter of [[Rust|Lord Rust]].

By the events of [[Snuff]] she is a grown woman, described by [[Havelock Vetinari| Lord Vetinari]] as "a hot-headed, ferocious woman, very difficult and very smart".

With the disgrace and exile of her brother [[Gravid Rust|Gravid]] to [[Fourecks]], after he had been found to have been using [[goblins]] as slaves and smuggling lethal [[troll]] drugs into [[Ankh-Morpork]], Regina is set to inherit her fathers position and title upon his death.

Given that Lord Rust is now ill and infirm it seems likely she will soon become Lady Rust and have control of the Rust family and power. Lord Vetinari complained to [[Samuel Vimes| Commander Vimes]] about this, stating that he would have preferred to have dealt with her brother Gravid, who is lazy idiot rather than his forceful and astute sister. Once rather feels he protests too much, and might relish the challenge. But it is unlikely Regina will make life easy for Sam Vimes or Vetinari, as it is to be expected she will hold them responsible for her brother’s exile and slight to her family and try to exact revenge.

Gravid Rust

The obnoxious and unpleasant son of [[Ronald Rust]] and heir to the Rust land and title. He is first encountered as the Rust son who was arrested by [[Sam Vimes]] and brought before the [[Patrician]] for shooting a servant for allegedly setting his boots out the wrong way round.

In {{FOC}} he (or his father) was later the chief suspect in paying for an assassin to kill Vimes as revenge. The assassin failed, discovering too late the lengths Vimes had gone to make the Ramkin house a lethal death-trap for unwanted intruders, and was forced to hand over the payment to Sir Samuel while suspended above the dragon pens.

In {{SN}} Vimes encounters him again, as a prime mover behind even greater crimes. Gravid Rust is capable of a certain greasy charm, and uses this to persuade people who should know better to join him in a series of escalating crimes and offences. Gravid was responsible for having [[goblins]] forcibly taken from [[Hangman's Hill]] and shipped for use as slave labour on his tobacco plantation in [[Howondaland]]. He also used the same shipments of tobacco to smuggle a number of troll drugs into Ankh-Morpork along with the tobacco. These included the deadly [[Crystal Slam]] and others including Slab, Slice, Slap, and Slunkie.

Three years later Gravid attempted to move a second shipment of goblins to Howondaland, also employing the ruthless killer [[Stratford]] to tidy away witnesses and lose ends. Here Gravid overreached himself, and by [[Vetinari|a lucky accident of chance]] [[Samuel Vimes]] was on holiday in the region to uncover this crime.

While most of Gravid's lackeys and smugglers were caught, and the corrupt magistrates removed, Vetinari was forced to point out to the enraged Vimes that slavery of goblins was not then a crime (goblins having being classed as vermin) and Gravid could not be brought to trial for his actions. While Diamond King of Trolls was demanding that Gravid be sent to him for trial (and near certain execution) for his role in shipping lethal troll drugs, the Patrician knew it would not be politically feasible to hand over the son of a prominent aristocrat for trolls to kill, regardless of his crimes. Instead Vetinari told Vimes that he would have to be content with Gravid being disinherited by his father, losing his position and title, and exiled to [[Fourecks]] for the foreseeable future. While this would be seen as a terrible fate for most aristocrats Vimes saw it as 'a nice holiday in the sun' for someone who had trafficked in misery and suffering for profit.

In the end, they say all sins are forgiven. Perhaps not all...

Vetinari is later seen ordering one of his [[Dark Clerk|dark clerks]] in Forecks to poison Gravid and make it appear like a natural accident. Vetinari must act in the dark and outside of the Law without sanction, luxuries he envies Vimes, to ensure that there is Justice for the goblins.

==Annotations==

The term '[[Wikipedia:Gravid|Gravid]]' in Roundworld refers to when animals (fish or reptiles) carry their eggs inside of them. On the Discworld, the term also applies to [[swamp dragons]], so probably has a different meaning. Then again, dragons are more or less reptiles and we don´t ''know'' that they don´t carry their eggs inside themselves.

Emile is a Captain from le Gendarmerie de [[Quirm]], or the Quirmian equivalent of the [[Ankh-Morpork City Watch]].

As part of an exchange program with the Watch (fueled by the high demand for [[Sam Vimes]] trained officers), he was sent to [[Ankh-Morpork]] and [[Haddock|Acting Captain Haddock]] was sent to replace him in Quirm sometime before the beginning of {{SN}}. This worked out fairly well for the Ankh-Morpork Watch, because he ''revolutionised'' the in-house catering for the Watch, delivering palatable canteen food with a large side-serving of ''avec''.

He was young, with mousy hair and no scars that show--as generic-looking as [[Moist von Lipwig]], in fact, except when he got angry enough for the beast inside to show through. Good with a slingshot, but more often seen wielding a machete or a nasty-looking assortment of small knives. He didn't like water, and wouldn't get on a boat if he could help it.

He came to the attention of [[Samuel Vimes|Commander Vimes]] during the latter's investigation of the murder on [[Hangman's Hill]]. He tried to outwit Vimes aboard the ''[[Wonderful Fanny]]'' by disguising himself as the river rat "Eddie Brassbound", but found himself outmaneuvered instead and, after a fight in the wheelhouse, left to go down with the ship.

But Stratford was not an easy man to kill, and he resurfaced on the ''[[Roberta E. Biscuit]]''. Where he tried to kill [[Young Sam Vimes]], but found his father instead who had not been drunk as Stratford first thought having seen him ingest many drinks named after him that night. Only then did he meet [[Willikins]] who had been disguised as a bartender who made Vimes the "virgin" Same Vimes. He was duly arrested and put on a Watch transport bound for [[Ankh-Morpork]] Before he could be conveyed into the hands of [[Daniel Trooper|One-Drop Trooper]], however, the wagon had a nasty collision with a mail coach and Stratford escaped in the confusion. He met [[Willikins]] on the road shortly after and was quickly subdued. Permanently.

Emily is engaged to be married, while Fleur and the others have a thriving bonnet-making business, which sets up an intricate multilevel pun. Mrs Gordon's daughters here, remember. ''[[Gordon Bonnets]]'' evokes the cry of awed disbelief down the Multiverse - ''Gordon Bennett!''. In the novel being parodied, and indeed in the early 1800's in England, wearing a bonnet was ''de rigeur''. Jane Austen and her characters are ''always'' depicted as bonnet-wearing, by some ancient by-law. And her family, of widowed mother and six daughters, was called ''Bennett''.

'''Ted Flutter''' is a former lackey of [[Gravid Rust]] whose testimony was critical in capturing [[Stratford]] and exposing the younger Rust's smuggling activity and enslavement of the goblins. He is a simple-minded man who fears everyone to some degree or another. Though he has quite a long criminal record--[[Feeney Upshot]]'s father arrested him on two dozen separate occasions--it isn't a very impressive one; Flutter is the kind of man who gets dragged along to be the lookout or to carry off the bones.

When he wasn't getting into trouble with the law, Flutter hung wallpaper and ran a turkey farm at his home a quarter-mile outside of Hangnails, though he wasn't particularly good at it and didn't take care of his birds. His work for Lord Rust consisted mostly of rolling barrels around, and he had quite a lot of illicit tobacco stored in his turkey sheds.

He was paid three dollars to help [[Stratford]] spread some blood around on [[Hangman's Hill]] but ended up witnessing the murder of a goblin woman instead and was subsequently forced to help hide her body. When [[Commander Vimes]] and Upshot confronted him about the incident, Flutter turned King's Evidence and revealed everything he knew about Stratford and Rust.

He was presumably convicted of being an accessory to the murder of the goblin girl, but in exchange for his cooperation he was allowed to serve out his sentence in a safe and comfortable cell in [[Pseudopolis Yard]] rather than taking his chances in the [[Tanty]].

'''Praise and Salvation False''' is a complicated chicken farmer encountered during the events of {{SN}}. It is left uncertain what exactly a complicated chicken ''is'', but we find that one of False's hens laid a square egg, which is, at least, thoroughly confusing. It seems that he has weak lungs and (bizarrely) a wooden toe, although the manner of the injury is probably better kept unexplained.

It is a character trait of people with a False name to try and explain the etymological derivation at every possible situation, even when faced with a watery death. In this case, the oft-trotted out explanation is that the family originated with the [[Klatch|Klatchian]] ''Thalassa'', which was eventually mispronounced as the surname we know now. It seems that several [[Feeney Upshot|residents of the Shire]] have foreign ancestry.

During the course of {{SN}}, he stowed away on the [[Wonderful Fanny]], in order to get to [[Quirm]] to set up a chicken houses for his business. However, when the barge was overtaken by [[Stratford]] and his crew he hid in a corner under some tarpaulin, on the basis that he had a bad knowledge pf fighting (chickens don't get aggressive) and no weapons. It must be said, however, that, in [[Sam Vimes]]' eyes, the contents of his toolbox- mallets, sledgehammers, saws, a crowbar and a large circular awl- came under the heading of 'weapons of mass destruction'.

==Annotation==
Square eggs have actually been commercially sold in Japan. Apparently the trick is to get the egg the instant it leaves the chicken, while the shell is still soft and malleable (Have you ever wondered how something that big comes out of a chicken without causing her too much discomfort? Hence the slightly teardrop shape of the egg.) While the shell is still warm and plastic, it is put into a glass mould and gently pressed into cuboid shape... the shell then hardens into its final square form, from which it may only be broken, not reshaped.

First off the main page keeps getting vandalised. I have undone edits twice in the last 24 hours where it has been replaced with an ad for methods of getting 'free' xbox live points. Is there no way to protect the page somehow or is that not something this version of the wiki software will do?

Also, I have spotted some redlinks for pages I wouldn't mind creating, but I can only seem to edit existing pages not add to blank ones, is this intentional? What we've discovered - Old Dickens and me spotted this independently - is that there are two "special" spammer names that just cannot be killed, at present: they appear to have burrowed themselves neatly into the deeper programming of the Wiki and corrupted the database. these two user-names specifically target the Main Page and at present appear kill-protected - all we can do here, for now, is to keep restoring the original edit. I suspect this may be a useful clue to something deeper. I also discovered a third spam user who just keeps coming back with the same name, however often we detect, delete, and merge. Like a vampire, this one has returned from the grave three times. O.K., so what I have gathered from looking at the documentation on the merge user tool is that this is caused by the spam user's watchlist. Would I be right in assuming that the Anonymous user you are merging them into is the one that you/the admins control? If so you need to log in as the Anonymous account, go in to the account's watchlist, edit raw watchlist and clear it. Addendum, if I got this right, the error is caused by the user you are trying to merge having something in their watch list that is already in the watch list of your dummy deletion account which the database can't handle.
