Hmmm. The recent edit contains no spam and it's too relevant to be called vandalism but it's certainly unsightly and unnecessary. We don't usually reproduce whole publications, even with permission. (L-Space main site, maybe.) :It's probably better to leave a message on user's talk page (I think it emails new people by default? If not it probably should) when people are new as if you aren't a regular and check back in a month or so it's already disappeared off watch list (the watch list is set by default to only 3 days too!) - I only found these messages by chance as I checked back on the page and noticed it gone
:It's definitely not a spoiler, it's from the apprentice wizard book that anyone new gets or anyone wandering in to look can read :) I thought it was a nice bit of fluff since it tries to elaborate more on ideas of how Discworld magic would 'work', if you don't want it's up to you admins but I thought it seemed nice since the page was so short and empty! --[[User:Rise Up Against the Ribbon|Rise Up Against the Ribbon]] ([[User talk:Rise Up Against the Ribbon|talk]]) 12:22, 3 August 2018 (UTC)

==Question==
Depending on usage, I spend ~$40 USD per month hosting this site. That cost has fluctuated as usage has gone up or down over the years. For example, Terry's passage forced a major resource increase for about a week tripling costs that month. Right now the site is sitting on an AWS T1/medium server which hosts both the database and website.

Originally, I had this site setup pretty slick. It sat on a single webserver using a separate Amazon RDS database server and depending on the volume of requests the site spun more instances up as necessary to scale with traffic. I stopped that because using a database on another server doubled the cost and the wife and I were going though a lean stretch.

I'd like to get back to that setup. It's more robust and I don't have to worry about much maintenance. But we're back in that lean time. So my question to the rest of you is would you object to a small paypal donate button being placed on the site to help defray the costs? Donate or not as you see fit. Thoughts? --[[User:Osiris|Osiris]] ([[User talk:Osiris|talk]]) 01:31, 30 July 2016 (UTC)
:I'm up for it, since you say advertising revenue can't be had. I've had near ten years of free entertainment; I don't know how generous the reading public might be. --[[User:Old Dickens|Old Dickens]] ([[User talk:Old Dickens|talk]]) 03:36, 30 July 2016 (UTC)
==Featured Article==
It seems to be ages since a Featured Article was nominated as an exemplar of everything that's right about this site. Can I suggest [[Book:Guards! Guards!|Guards! Guards!]] as a candidate? for one thing, it seems to be a rare "completed" book page with no red links leading to empty pages!
:...but that's not the stated objective of the Featured Article. It's a request for improvement, not a commendation. The last thing good articles need is attention from bloat fans and graffiti artists.<BR>
:Since no one ever pays any attention to it anyway, should we change the heading to suggest an exemplar instead? That seems useful and in line with Wikipedia's version, but we'd want to change it a lot more often. --[[User:Old Dickens|Old Dickens]] ([[User talk:Old Dickens|talk]]) 15:49, 3 August 2016 (UTC)
Has anyone looked at stuff like [[wikipedia:Template:Cite book]] and [[wikipedia:Template:Cite web]] and thought about converting them over to here? I looked at them and they are extremely bloated and over-complicated with code-spam on Wikiped, and in fact I saw that someone else already tried to make [[:Template:Cite web]] years ago in an aborted attempt, it doesn't work and no one is using it, so I tried to mark it for deletion ( but there is no proper category or template for that either :) )

I looked in the history of Wikipedia's versions to find the old-school simple template versions of them without all the pages of code-spam but the 2008 version can't be used here because it triggers the spam filter ("Spam protection filter - The text you wanted to save was blocked by the spam filter. This is probably caused by a link to a blacklisted external site. The following text is what triggered our spam filter: display: n0ne") ( I HAD TO EDIT THIS OUT OF THIS PAGE MESSAGE EVEN :) )

I then copied their 2006 version of <nowiki>{{Cite book}}</nowiki> but this doesn't seem to work on [[Book:Discworld's Assassins' Guild Diary 2000]] and I see the <pre><ref></ref></pre> tags visible on the page because I guess those aren't added to the mediawiki version Lspace has or something? :(

I think if these were added however possible it'd add a lot to pages, to be able to easily see where stuff is sourced from
==Question==

It seems to be ages since a Featured Article was nominated as an exemplar of everything that's right about this site. Can I suggest [[Book:Guards! Guards!|Guards!

I think if these were added however possible it'd add a lot to pages, to be able to easily see where stuff is sourced from --[[User:Rise Up Against the Ribbon|Rise Up Against the Ribbon]] ([[User talk:Rise Up Against the Ribbon|talk]]) 12:12, 3 August 2018 (UTC)

One of the splendid miscellany of books about Discworld with no specific novel value, but with background details in that no fan would ''dream'' of not knowing, such as the traditions of the [[Assassins' Guild]], full lists of teaching staff, high days and holidays, and famous dates and alumni of the Guild.

This book was first to introduce female assassins as students (though [[Pyramids]] several years prior has [[Lady T'Malia]] as one of the teachers) and the new Black Widow House, as well as the characters of Miss Alice Band and Mme les Deux-Épées<ref>{{Cite book|title=Discworld Assassins' Guild Yearbook and Diary 2000|publisher=Victor Gollancz, Ltd.|id={{ISBN|0575066873|country=uk}}|date=1999|page=4, 'Head Master's Address', p16-17, 'The College Tutors', diary20-22 October}}</ref>, and later in the Discworld short story "Minutes of the Meeting to Form the Proposed Ankh-Morpork Federation of Scouts" in ''[[A Blink of the Screen]]'',{{citation needed|date=March 2016}} to then becoming characters and a playable Assassins' Guild House in [[Discworld MUD]].

''Most'' of these details have since been incorporated into the greatly expanded Assassins' Guild entry in {{NDC}}, as has happened with other yearbooks and diaries, but there is at least one surprising omission of detail which did not cross to ''The New Discworld Companion'': the back-story of Madame [[Deux-Epées]] which appears in this diary was left out. Which leads the reader to wonder if other things were missed too.

A translated version was released in 2001 in Germany as '''''Der Scheibenwelt-Kalender 2001'''''. It appears to be identical in format to the English-language version with the original Kidby pencil drawings, and most of the German text appears to be a "straight" translation of the English. However, the bilingual reader (or the reader trying to stretch their comprehension of German) is advised to note that some originally-English concepts appear to be difficult to render in German, and many of the character names in German are divergent from the English. Examples of this include:

* Lord [[Downey]] - ''Lord Witwenmacher''
* Miss [[Smith-Rhodes]] - ''Frau Richtsgutan''.
* Jasper [[Chrysoprase]] - ''F.D.R. Hauer''
* Mr [[Lamister]] - ''Herr Jammer''
* Professor Stone - ''Professor Stein'' (OK, some are easy)

Consult the German Wiki (many pages have a lower-left link to "Deutsch") for further information.
From the Head Master

I must tell you all that, following the experiment last term, the Guild Council has voted to accept young ladies on the roll this year. I am aware that a number of you have strong feelings on this issue, but there you are. We must be seen to move with the times.

We are also taking on our first troll. Again, I am aware of the arguments. However, the Chrysoprase family is paying for the new Alchemy laboratory and I have met with the young troll in question. He has an exuberant tendency to violence that only needs harnessing to practical purposes for him to become a valuable member of the Guild.

I am sure you will all be pleased to learn that no less than AM$1,100 was raised for a memorial plaque to Mr [[Stanley 'Touché' Danpipe]] (Fencing) whose clean death at the end of last term at the hands of P.Phelps, Lower Fifth, was a lesson to us all in both style and duty. It will be engraved with his last words, which were 'Very good, boy. A marked improvement since last year. Aaargh.'

Rise Up Against the Ribbon:

The very first [[grimoire|textbook]] acquired by any student wizard at the start of his first year at [[Unseen University]]. On a scale of potency, this is presumably at the very opposite end of the scale that things like the [[Necrotelicomnicon]] are at the far end of. Another beginners' book (albeit for slightly older and wiser students) is the [[Necrotelicomnicon Discussed for Students, with Practical Experiments]].

In {{J}}, we are given a glimpse of a Book Depository in the University from which an assassination attempt has (ostensibly) been made on a [[Khufurah|visiting foreign dignitary]] in a time of tense diplomatic confrontation. A background detail is stack upon stack of timeworn copies of Woddeley's, all of which are sorry, broken-spined, coverless, and much-abused by generations of students. Anything really potent would not have been published in such numbers, nor would they be disposed of so casually.

Certainly, when [[Angua von Überwald|Angua]] picks up a dog-eared copy out of curiosity, and reads aloud from '''''Chapter Fifteen: Elementary Necromancy''''' ("First, you need a spade"...), she is unscathed, and totally untroubled by any of the things that might beset a non-wizard who tries to read from a ''really'' potent grimoire. There is no sign at all of her brain liquefying and trickling out of her ears, and her eyes totally fail to melt.

Woddeley's would therefore count as the ideal primer for fledgling wizards.

Indeed, in {{MP}}, [[Victor Tugelbend]] and [[Ponder Stibbons]] are seen using the book for this very purpose as they cram for their final exams, taking in topics such as [[Yob Soddoth]] and [[Tshup Aklathep|The Infernal Star-Toad with A Million Young]].

It is also very probable that in the latest edition, Chapter Fifteen has now been revised to take in the reality of changes in the nature of wizardry, as it moves away from the dribbly-candle into the bright new dawn of modern technomancy. The latest edition may read:

'''''Chapter Fifteen: Elementary [[Department of Post-Mortem Communications|Post-Mortem Communications]]''''' ("First, you need a realistic-looking skull mask from [[Boffo Novelty and Joke Shop|Boffo]]'s and a plausible chant"...)

A probably-shorter imagining of this was written in [[Discworld MUD]]:

<pre>look thin book

This is a thin, useful-looking, cloth-bound book. It looks well read, judging by the way the pages curl at the corners.
Just beneath the surface, you can make out what looks like a pair of closed eyes.
It appears to have something written on it.
It is closed.

read thin book

You read the cover of the thin book:
Woddeley's Occult Primer

open thin book

You open the thin book to page 1.

read thin book

You read page one of the thin book:
You read page two of the thin book:

Animating:

Animating involves giving a mind to somethyng
inanimate. The clasfic ecksample ys the creation
of a golem; a more fafhionable ecksample ys the
making of a Brassica oleracea ambulata, the walking
cabbage. Generally speaking, animating ys not too
arduous, since all thyngs yearn towards sentience,
but yt works beft with a object of suitable complecksity
to hold the mind.

Channeling:

Channeling ys the conveying of mental energy from
one place to another, ufually between minds. The moft
bafic form would be the tranfferral of power from one
wyzard to another; the reverfe of thys, the sucking of
energy from one mind by a wyzard ys evil and, moreover,
dangerous, since yt attracts the attention of Thyngs.

Charming:

Charming ys ufed to convince someone to do your
bydding. Yt becomes more dyfficult to charm wyth
yncreafed mental ability of the target, although
choofing a target for whom the relevant action would
be yn character or conform with the target's beliefs
helps confiderably.

Convoking:

Convoking draws together other minds, either to
magnify the power to be ufed yn a spell or merely
for a mental conference. An ynterefting eckfample of
thys skyll may be found yn the spell "Kamikaze
Oryctolagus Flammula", one of the famous creature
spells of the fyre wyzard Frottjor.

Cursing:

Cursing ys the method ufed to affect the beliefs
and other attributes - though ufually belief ys
sufficient - of someone. Thys tends to be the province
of wytches, whereas wyzards prefer being more direct.

Binding:

Binding involves the attaching of a magickal
effect to an object. Thys ys ufed, for inftance,
yn the manufacture of magickal weapons and armour:
a wyzard might bind an effect to allow better night
vifion ynto a helm or a better grip for climbing
ynto a pair of gloves.

Brewing:

Brewing ys another method that tends not to be
practifed by wyzards but ys moftly utilifed by wytches
and apothecaries. Yt confifts of performing a magickal
reaction on a micksture of subftances - as oppofed to a
merely alchemical reaction - to obtain a magickal subftance
or potion.

Chanting:

Chanting concerns the vocal afpects of spell cafting.
Often more important for the attainment of a mood or
feeling, yt can still have a profound occult effect on some
types of creature.
Dancing:

Dancing ys a method similar to chanting yn many
regards, confifting as yt does of the ufe of body-motion
afpects of spell cafting. Many treatifes on wytchcraft
contain fafcinating accounts of rites involving thys
skill to which the interefted reader ys directed.
Enchanting:

Enchanting deals directly with the raw matter, so to
speak, of magick as yt ys the changing of the magickal
field of an object. Except yn the prefence of a
sourceror, enchantment muft be conferved: for low power
spells, such as Brother Happalon's Elementary Enchanting,
the enchantment may be eckstracted from the naturally
occurring fluctuations yn the background, while more
powerful spells muft, yn esfence, tranffer enchantment
from one object to another.
Evoking:

Evoking means to draw forth the magickal properties
of an object. A subtle method, yt ys important for
wyzards as yt ys the major diagnoftic skill yn probing
thyngs magickal.
Healing:

Healing by magick ys a tricky bufinesf, but when yt
works yt boofts the life force of a living thyng.
Yt ys generally better to rely upon potions or the
attentions of a prieft, yet those sufficiently skilled
may have enough control to ufe yt succesffully.
Scrying:

Scrying ys a broadly applied method ufed to send a
wyzard's senfes to another place. Often thys ys done
indirectly using crystal balls, mirrors, bowls of
water, Caroc cards, Ching-a-ling and a whole hoft of
techniques ending in -mancy. Thefe methods are
generally preferred over sending the raw senfes where
there ys the danger of not coming back.
Abjuring:

Abjuring ys one of the moft important parts of
demonology, for those that care to get involved in such
thyngs, as yt forces a spirit to abftain from some
action, such as leaping out of the magick octogram and
devouring the wyzard.
Banishing:

Banishing ys usually ufed to end an encounter with
a spirit, sending yt back to yts normal place of dwelling.
Having control over the spirit ys a great asfet, as often
they prefer being here and don't want to go back.
Conjuring:

Conjuring - not to be confufed with the type of
magickal creation of thyngs - ys ufed to requeft a
spirit to perform some action, like abjuring but the
other way around.
Divining:

Divining ys the eckftraction of information from
a spirit. A counterpart to scrying, yt has the
advantage of not putting your own senfes at ryfk, but
the difadvantage that most spirits are notorious
meaning twifters.

Summoning ys the firft method ufed yn any spirit
meeting or demonological encounter, since yt ys
ufed to bring a spirit into a wyzard's prefence.
