New page

Not blowing my own trumpet (or I'd provide a link) but in one of my fanfics, I advance a theory that a human equivalent might be South African biltong....--AgProv 12:59, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
:...only it's meat. You could make sandwiches if you had a good sharp Dwarf axe. --Old Dickens 14:10, 1 June 2010 (UTC)

The train of thought ran: if the Discworld has an equivalent of South Africa, and there are tantalising hints here and there that indicate it indeed does*, then perhaps "Rimwards Howondaland" has biltong. If like South Africa it mines gold and diamonds, there will almost certainly be dwarves.

Would Dwarves made even stroppier, humourless and short of temper by being, er, Sed-Effrikan, make their biltong from dried and smoked rat and avoid eating it between two pieces of dwarf bread, as a nice nourishing sandwich?

*It's just that Terry hasn't written about it yet.... - after all, the whole idea of XXXX began as a throwaway two-line joke in RM, nothing more than a whimsical reference to a far-off land where the wizards surfed the boiling wave between Light and Dark whilst wearing pointy hats with corks strung from the brim, pausing only to toss another prawn onto the barbie... not a lot to go on, but it eventually became the whole of TLC. Similarly, the whole idea of TAMAHER was born as a two-line gag in about a typically Morporkian sting operation that even succeeded in conning Vetinari. (Hence the need for Maurice, rats and stupid-looking kid to get out of town poste-haste?) Cumulatively, there are quite a few sly references to a Discworld "South Africa", but they've just not been worked up into an official canonical book yet, if at all...

I'd forgotten cram from The Hobbit and LoTR, I'd pretty much always assumed that Dwarf Bread was analogous to lembas in Terry's usual way of turning an idea on it's head. Somewhat appropriately is also brings back memories of my mothers "fairy cakes" that had an uncanny similarity to the bread that Carrot's mother sends him....... --Megahurts 12:41, 19 October 2010 (CEST)
