Ach y fi! Even though I've heard it - often - in spoken Welsh and in the Wenglish of the borders, "manky" doesn't seem to be a Welsh word in its origins or however you spell it. It was certainly used a lot in Army-speak to denote things falling short of miltary perfection. There's ''mwn-ci'', meaning monkey, an animal renowned for a casual attitude towards cleanliness...
