People from other countries tend to snigger at the idea of a place called Dorking. It exists, just outside London.

The thought is that Newton Pulsifer is presented as somebody so hopelessly ineffectual that "nerd" might represent a promotion and a significant rise in social status. Even the traditional refuge of Nerd-dom is denied him - as he has no gift at all for computers, save the power to crash any device ever invented by the hand of Man.

So there is an odd fittingness to his home town, in that Newton, as he first appears, is the Dork from Dorking (although he more than finds himself by the end of {{GO}})
