Colonel Charles Augustus Makepeace is a retired army officer who has learnt to hold his peace in the presence of his formidable wife. He is first introduced at a dinner hosted at [[Crundells]] by the Duke and Duchess of Ankh, where his wife assures him (despite his previous beliefs) that potted shrimp, lobster and seafood of any kind simply don't agree with him.
