Again refer to James Herriot's books about working as a vet in rural Yorkshire in the 1930's. A theme of Herriot's early practice was that in those last few years before the introduction of then-revolutionary sulphonilamide and penicillin-based drugs, the basis of most animal remedies was indeed turpentine, as it had been for centuries... Herriot discusses these at length, as he does the traditional Yorkshire names and terms connected with animals and their illnesses, many of which are suggestive of Mrs Aching's sheep diseases.<br />
