This Long Earth (Earth West) is immediately adjacent to the Gap and becomes strategically important in Book Three, The Long Mars as the launch point of the human race towards the Long Venus and the Long Mars. The research base here also appears as a plot point in Book Two The Long War concerning the status and treatment of trolls.
