In former times, this Common between Water Bridge and Bridge of Size at the turnwise bank of Ankh river was Ankh-Morpork's place of public execution. The name apparently derives from the way a procession of condemned criminals would follow a priest (of religion of choice) like chickens after a mother hen, to the scaffold.
