Suggests two references:-

i) the philosopher Nietschze talked about "beware of looking into the Abyss, because the Abyss might look back at you"

ii) The Roundworld mystic and mountebank Aleistar Crowley maintained that the last and greatest test of the Magician lies in contemplating the nature of the unfounded Abyss that lies between the Mage and the Godhead.
