New page

--AgProv 14:40, 1 May 2007 (CEST)Are all the alternative links here and elsewhere necessary? (Witch instead of Witches, Witchcraft instead of Witches magic, it seems confusing.)--Old Dickens 19:21, 30 April 2007 (CEST)

:Not at all. You should talk to the new user User:AgProv who made yesterdays changes. Some of his page titles seem a bit unfortunate, too. -- Death(incognito and lower-case)13:52, 1 May 2007 (CEST)

Apologies

Can you put any glitches or faux-pas down to over-enthusiasm? I'll certainly make the reccomended changes here! Anything else that's advised by "old hands" and Sysops, if it falls foul of accepted practice, I'll certainly make corrections accordingly. The last thing I want to do is to cause trouble! Now about those "unfortunate page titles"... what can be done here?--AgProv 14:06, 1 May 2007 (CEST)

Right, just spent a while going through entries made to look at links showing in red - thanks, Death, your prompt enabled me to sort a few out that were pointing at un-necessary duplications, I've sorted those as far as I've found them (linked to legitimate and valid entries with slightly variant spelling - I'm surprised Witches magic takes precedence over "Witchcraft", though, as Discworld witches seem to place an emphasis on the "craft" part rather than on "magic", but you live and learn.). Other links in red are pointing at "shell" pages that other people have created but which, for whatever reason, haven't been filled yet.

Please also clue me up as to which entry titles are thought of as "unfortunate", as I have tried to keep everything Pratchett-focused - in some cases it's pretty hard to ignore external influences that show up in the writings, though, and at least a passing mention of them should be acceptible, esp. where clearly noted as annotations/sources?

Thanks--AgProv 14:40, 1 May 2007 (CEST)

OK, here goes. I already mentioned the out-of-range topics; we're a creature of L-Space, "a Terry Pratchett/Discworld Web Site", called the Discworld and Pratchett Wiki. I don't see any room for other authors outside the Reading Suggestions.
I suspect Death was referring especially to Birthday, Frog-like humanoid thing with a. It's not useful to make up your own names for characters or phenomena: how is anyone supposed to look them up?

In more technical areas, avoid the one-sentence paragraphs and point form : they look rushed and perfunctory. Generally, we try for a cross between Wikipedia-encyclopedic and Stephen Briggs mickey extracting styles. Use the Preview function more to avoid six lines per article in Recent Changes so we can see more than the last hour's work.
Re: Witches magic : the headings Witches magic and Wizards' Magic predate me, but the symmetry seems sensible (although I'd prefer matching apostrophes.)

Annotations generally have been a vexed question. I don't mess with them, myself; maybe you should form a committee with Kellyterryjones, who has already started an ambitious project to collect annotations. It seems to be on hold until the new APF appears.

These problems wouldn't be severe if we had a lot more editors working (or you slowed down), but lately, as the AP says THERE'S JUST ME.--Old Dickens 16:41, 1 May 2007 (CEST)

Understood. Please be assured that first flood of enthusiasm is slowing down (so pleased to find this site!) and there is always time for revisions and edits where these are necessary.

I've gathered the need for using Preview... or it really is going to give a false impression that this is all my own work! My ego is not that big...

Birthday, Frog-like humanoid thing with a... I do see your point, but this character is not named in the book, as he only has a walk on (slither on?) part for half a page. Assigning a title that describes he/she/it in the context of the book WA seemed a logical thing to do, especially as the G*LL*M connection seemed self-evident...

I will seek to check and revise entries in the light of your constructive criticism.
