Victor Gollancz Ltd. is a major SF publisher in the UK. It is part of the Orion Publishing Group.

History

Victor Gollancz Ltd. was founded in 1927 by Victor Gollancz and concentrated on the publication of high quality literature and popular fiction. Among the published authors were George Orwell and Anthony Price. Upon Gollancz's death in 1967, ownership passed to his daughter, Livia. She sold it to Houghton Mifflin in 1989. Three years later, in October 1992, Houghton Mifflin sold Gollancz to Cassell & Co. In December 1998 the Orion Publishing Group acquired the publishing house Cassell & Co, whose imprints included Victor Gollancz Ltd. Victor Gollancz and is now the science fiction/fantasy imprint of the Orion group.

Also in 1998, a majority of the share capital of the Orion Publishing Group was sold to Hachette Livre, the French publishing arm of the Lagardere Group. In 2003 Hachette Livre became the sole owner of the group. In January 2002, with the acquisition of the Octopus Publishing Group by Hachette Livre, the popular illustrated imprints of Cassell & Co were transferred to the Octopus Group.
