Discussion before content! I don't have the book yet: is "de Quirm" the official designation from Snuff? I always thought "Quirmienne". Also, why not remove the article (La)? --Old Dickens 02:27, 16 October 2011 (CEST) - (It's worse than that, it turns out. --Old Dickens 01:42, 25 October 2011 (CEST))

Weaseling

Many may have become used to the idea of the Gendarmerie policing Quirm, but Snuff mentions only the "Quirm City Watch". Little detail is provided about the organisation, so there are various possibilities left for fan fiction and general speculation:

  • "City Watch" is a translation used by Morporkians in and out of Quirm, as we might say "Paris police" without attempting to understand the large bureaucracy in the Quai des Orfèvres.
  • The City Watch is a section of the Gendarmerie, following the French model of departmental policing.
  • Remember that the Gendarmerie is a military organisation; in Quirm it might be a separate "federal" force dealing with national security, smuggling, the borders...(the Gendarmerie Royal du Canada vs. the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal).

  • The footnote on p.13 refers to the "Quirm gendarmerie". --Old Dickens 23:55, 5 November 2011 (CET)
