Monica "Spooky" Jansson is a member of the Madison Police Department in Wisconsin, and one of the lead investigators into the events of Step Day in 2015. She discovered the original Stepper in the home of Willis Linsay, and after meeting Joshua Valienté was one of the first to realise he was a natural Stepper, though kept his secret, earning his trust. In the following months she became a go-to investigator for crimes involving stepping, earning her the nickname "Spooky" and a reputation for understanding the difficulties of policing in the age of stepping. She tried to recruit Joshua to the department many times, without success, and through him met Sally Linsay and later Frank Wood.

By 2030 Jansson had risen to the rank of lieutenant, and was at ground zero for the nuclear incident in Datum Madison. In the aftermath Jansson insisted on returning to the Datum to help survivors and as a result developed leukaemia. In 2040, now retired from the police and living in Madison West 5, she went on one last trip deep into the Long Earth with Sally. She sacrificed her life to enter the lethally radioactive pyramid on Rectangles, and afterwards returned to Madison West 5. She died peacefully in her sleep, attended by Frank, a week after the Yellowstone eruption.
