I just wonder if the ax for forgiveness is inspired by the ax in the Norwegian mythical history: St Olav won Norway to Christianity when he lay down his ax (and he was killed, but everybody then realised he was a saint). Sorry, am unable to find link - all links I find are just about use of symbol, not meaning.
