We know all trolls, as they get older, will tend to slow down and have a jolly good think on the nature of the universe.

One of only two trolls specifically mentioned as philosophers is Plateau. His recorded words of wisdom are:-

It always a good thing to seek to unnerstand your enemy. You gotta walk a mile in his shoes to unnerstand him, right? Dat way, if he still your enemy, you a mile away and you got his shoes.

(Quoted in the essay Thud! A historical perspective, by Terry Pratchett.[1])

Annotation

A reference to possibly the best-known of all of Roundworld's philosophers, Plato who, together with his teacher, Socrates, and his student, Aristotle, helped to lay the philosophical foundations of Western culture. Plato was also a mathematician, writer of philosophical dialogues, and founder of the Academy in Athens, the first institution of higher learning in the western world.
