Who would know (apart from the Curator of Ephebian Antiquities at the Royal Art Museum and Miss Grace Speaker, "Puzzler" of the Times) that these are ancient Ephebian carved-bone needle holders? They are also a gift to crossword compilers with an awkward seven-letter clue to fill.
