When her father as King invites Mau and the new Nation to join his empire, they politely decline, saying they would like to join the Royal Society.

The Royal Society represents the kind of people Daphne wants to know about the carvings and pictures in the God Pool. Daphne had been to Royal Society lectures in London.

Daphne explains that Nation's ancestors were scientists, that Nation was where science began. And she has made the Nation aware that when the Royal Society was formed, King Charles the Second had said that it deserved a mace "alike in bigness to our own".

Nation would welcome all men of science as brothers, brothers who had travelled to the other end of the world, and come back at last to the place they left behind.
