The use of "learnt" or "spelt" (always suggests to me an obscure grain that you should like because it's good for you) as the past participle is almost unknown this side (left) of the Atlantic. Even I am astonished that it's still used (and accepted) as the the simple past tense. Will British English and North American English eventually separate entirely or deteriorate into a Danish/Swedish model? It would be unfortunate if we could no longer enjoy the Terry Pratchetts of the future or if the other side couldn't understand John Irving or James Lee Burke. --Old Dickens 05:50, 19 November 2011 (CET)
