Wikipedia would have us believe the first police force in the modern sense was in Paris in 1667. Glasgow established theirs in 1800 (of course, Glasgow needed it worse.) ...--Old Dickens 03:52, 3 January 2009 (UTC)
We still call 'em "peelers" in Belfast (insert joke here about "We will shortly be landing in Belfast. Please set your watches back 300 years"). Come to think of it, "Sammies" would work fine in Belfast.
