Most vampires who move to Ankh Morpork become 'Black Ribboners' ( Otto Chriek the Iconographer in The Word) and foreswear their addiction to human blood.
Like Sam Vimes who substitutes cigars for his cherished bottle of 'Old BearHugger', a vampire must find something else to fixate on.
In Maledict's case it is coffee.
Cpl Strappi (qv) destroy's Maledict's 'Coffee Engin ' as a petty act of malice. Deprived of his(her) fix, Maledict starts to hallucinate, with ongoing flashbacks to a Vietnam war era conflict ( taken from Roundworld).
