Then there's the Shirley Jackson horror classic The Haunting of Hill House. --Old Dickens 18:07, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

Good point! Eleanor Lance = Alice Band - I can see definite asociations there. --AgProv 20:32, 30 November 2009 (UTC)

But I think I've worked it out now: some of the newer Assassins' Guild houses appear, quite boringly, to be simply (?) named after areas of the city. Thus Tump House, Welcome Soap House, Broken Moons (Plaza) House. Unless Welcome Soap has a history in the eyes of the Guild (who or what may have been inhumed here ?) this is fairly prosaic. --AgProv 10:35, 3 December 2008 (UTC)

There's an interesting point of view, expressed on the wikipedia pages on the Assassins' Guild and other places, that in order to meet the costs of refurbishment of the Guild school, and the set-up costs of admitting what has been estimated to be 180 female pupils per year, the Guild sought external sponsorship, in the same manner that prestigious British public schools put the hat out to old boys who have done well in business or to the sort of never-been-boys who nevertheless want the social cachet of being associated with Eton, Winchester, Harrow, et c.

Thus, Tump House would have been paid for by sponsorship money from what at the time is likely to have been one of Ankh-Morpork's richest businesses, the Grand Trunk (based on Tump Tower). Reacher Gilt would have seen the advantages: advertising, good PR, having the Guild onside, his being seen as a respectable businessman, and driving home the ideological message that much more can be gained socially from the private charity of rich benefactors giving of their own free will (rather than being taxed heavily by a left-wing State that then wastes the money). This last point was firmly held by Margaret Thatcher, Ayn Rand and other right-wing ideologues. --AgProv 10:36, 16 April 2010 (UTC)
