Jethro Jefferson is the smith of the village near to Ramkin Hall who rather foolishly decides to vent his anger with the local authorities in a bout of fisticuffs with Samuel Vimes where he comes close to adding to the list of men who have the words 'refused Fantailler' on their tombstones. In possession of a hot temper, he quickly cools off. After illegally being sent on a holiday in the sun by the cronies of the local magistrates, he is recovered by Vimes and joins the Shires force under Chief Constable Upshot.
