Fray is a mysterious phenomenon on the Carpet. It causes darkness, hairs are flattened, animals flee and the air pressure rises. Whether Fray is some spiritual omnipotent being, or a perfectly explainable natural phenomenon is under discussion.
Mouls can sense Fray approaching, and use the following confusion to attack. Animals seem to be able to sense Fray, but apart from those only the Munrung Snibril can feel a few minutes ahead when Fray is close.
Annotation
The most common explanation is the passage of a human foot.
