In the universe of The Dark Side of the Sun, they are the proto-race, the first intelligent life to arise in the Universe, who died out leaving only the enigmatic Joker Towers and a handful of other artefacts to remind successor races, such as humans, Creapii and Sun-dogs that they ever existed.

Their most enduring artefact is not a made thing but several lines of enigmatic verse, announcing, in the mode of the faerie folk of Old Ireland, that they did not die, but moved to "the dark side of the sun"...

It falls to Dom Sabalos and his friends to unravel this enigma.

Annotation

The opening lines of Bob Dylan's All Along the Watchtower, as immortalised by Jimi Hendrix...

The Joker towers are thought to be built of monomolecular material and as such are stronger and more impregnable than anything the human race can muster to break into them.

Now consider the line There must be some kinda way out of here/Said the Joker to the thief...

Also, in Old Ireland, the sidhe/Faerie Folk just went to the "other side of the hill" to get away from an increasingly hostile human race and an alien religion (Christianity). The Jokers similarly went to "the dark side of the Sun"...
