Its lead character (Roddy McDowall) was nicknamed "Mollymauk". (A mollymauk is not actually a duck, but a smallish albatross of the the Antipodes.) The name jumped out at me as soon as I read it and I wonder if it's the source of the name, both "in universe" and as TP's source. It's just as likely to be known in Ankh-Morpork as the Land of Fog's morpork itself. --[[User:Old Dickens|Old Dickens]] 15:43, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

Does anyone else remember one of the great "lost" movies, George Axelrod's Lord Love a Duck? Its lead character (Roddy McDowall) was nicknamed "Mollymauk". (A mollymauk is not actually a duck, but a smallish albatross of the Antipodes). The name jumped out at me as soon as I read it and I wonder if it's the source of the name, both "in universe" and as TP's source. It's just as likely to be known in Ankh-Morpork as the Land of Fog's morpork itself. --Old Dickens 15:43, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
The bird is now included in the article as a source, but I'm not so sure. --Old Dickens (talk) 06:07, 22 January 2021 (UTC)

Considering the proximity of Wokingham to Aldermaston, it is probably more likely that TP got the idea from the tale of local lass Molly Mog. --Lias Bluestone (talk) 21:35, 23 January 2021 (UTC)

Some of us colonials don't see the relevance of Aldermaston; the town seems to be known for nuclear weapons and cricket bats, although it does have a candle fair (a very roundabout and tenuous connection). --Old Dickens (talk) 00:52, 24 January 2021 (UTC)
Edited the "Origins" a bit. Mollymauks and morporks are both Kiwis, mind you. --Old Dickens (talk) 01:08, 27 January 2021 (UTC)

It's relevant because TP worked there in his youth, and so Aldermaston and Wokingham are in his youthful stamping-ground. There is some known overspill from Reading itself into Ankh-Morpork -- note the notorious Smelly Alley -- where it should be noted that Reading is the market hub less than 10 miles from both. --Lias Bluestone (talk) 21:39, 28 January 2021 (UTC)
