Googling throws up Australian fantasy author Sarah Douglass, in whose Pilgrim there are demons who put out a "grey miasma" of madness and confusion prior to feeding.

Conan Doyle also has Dr watson refer to the milieu of crime and skullduggery inhabited by Sherlock Holmes as a "grey miasma" capable of proviking fearful confusion in any but the excveptionally-minded Holmes.... AgProv 00:09, 4 June 2012 (CEST)
