I thought the bell rang when a contract was completed and Stephen Briggs agrees. Do we have a canonical reference? --Old Dickens (talk) 04:26, 23 January 2023 (UTC)
- The first reference to it I can find is in Men at Arms, in which it is rung by Dr Cruces to assemble the Guild Council. I looked thought a few others and couldn’t find any other mentions in the novels, not even in Pyramids, Hogfather or Night Watch. This tradition seems to have been invented for the tour of the Guild given in the Assassin’s Guild Diary, as reproduced in The Ankh-Morpork Archives A Discworld Anthology: Volume One, which was incorporated into later editions of the Companion (specifically Turtle Recall and The Ultimate Discworld Companion). It says the Bell is rung on the successful completion of an assignment, or the death of an old pupil. I’ll update the page. -- Guybrush (talk) 05:51, 26 January 2023 (UTC)
