Like Goose Gate, it probably doesn't refer to the wall or swinging types of gates. The word seems to have meant a way or path (likely related to gait) originally. It seems to be used for a soak or market as well, typically in a cul-de-sac. --Old Dickens (talk) 16:10, 11 December 2012 (PST)
