Samedi Nuit Mort Ball
There's always some uncultured bugger who thinks the invitation came from a Mr Reservup....
An event held in Genua, and during the reign of the Duc and Lilith, outlawed in the city proper but continued in 'old' Genua. Literally Saturday Night Death Ball, this is a parody of the various Roundworld carnivals that have sprung up in areas where Creole and Haitian Voodoo rituals have turned to mass alcoholic dancing sprees. Which pretty much sums up the Genuan approach to festivity.
Samedi is also a reference to Baron Samedi, a major figure in voodoo mythology. In Witches Abroad, the old Baron (Ella's father) has been turned into a zombie and an incarnation of Samedi. In voodoo, Baron Samedi stands at the crossroads of life and death.
