Bauxite is a Troll watchman living in Ankh-Morpork.

During the time of Men at Arms, he joined the group of trolls celebrating Troll New Year marching down Short Street. And by pure coincidence, there happened to be some dwarfs celebrating Koom Valley Day marching up Short Street. Oh dear.

Later, following an intervention by Carrot and the rest of the Night Watch, he and Bluejohn were drummed into the Watch by Carrot and Detritus as Lance-Constables (metaphorically by Carrot, literally by Detritus). He was made to swear the ancient troll oath of "I will do what I told otherwise I get my goohuloog head kicked in" by Detritus in the process, in lieu of the formal Watch oath.

One of his first assignments was when Sergeant Colon ordered him and Lance-Constable Coalface to apprehend a maddened Detritus. He requested leave time to attend his grandmother's funeral, commenting "It either her or me, Sarge".

Presumably, along with Bluejohn, he remained in the Watch as a Lance-Constable after Men at Arms when the Watch was restored to a strength of 56. Whether he has been promoted further is unknown.

Geology

Like most Troll characters, Bauxite is named after rock. On Roundworld, bauxite is the most important aluminium ore.

Annotation

Bauxite is also the name of a town in the state of Arkansas in the US, which was named after the ore as well, due to large amounts of it in the vicinity.
