He was the previous secretary to Havelock Vetinari, and a childhood comrade of Sam Vimes in the Cockbill Street Roaring Lads. He gave the impression that he had just been completed, with hair so oiled and slicked down it looked painted on. An ambitious man, he advanced upwards from his poor roots to become chief secretary to the Patrician, while Vimes had just advanced sideways to become captain of the Night Watch.

Using the guise of the Supreme Grand Master of the Elucidated Brethren of the Ebon Night, he summoned a Noble dragon to Ankh-Morpork so that his pre-fab "heir to the throne" could appear to destroy it and acquire legitimacy. Wonse would then have been the Klatchian Mist behind the throne.

However, once allowed a way in, the Dragon returned to Ankh-Morpork and flamed the rest of the Brethren. The Dragon, revealed as a 'she', then left with Errol, a small Swamp dragon. Wonse was finally killed when the literal-minded Carrot followed an instruction to throw the book at him, causing him to fall backwards through a missing wall on a high level of the Patrician's Palace, down to the Throne Room below.
